Job description

This is a rolling hiring student employment opportunity that is open from Fall Quarter to the end of Spring Quarter.

Eligible students must qualify for Federal Work Study for this position. 

Eligible students must have reliable transportation.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

America Reads tutors assist Alvord Unified School District students with improving their reading and language arts skills. Employment as an America Reads tutor has the potential to be extremely fun and rewarding, however, the charge of helping a child improve their language arts and/or reading ability cannot be taken lightly. You would be responsible for providing tutoring services in Language Arts and reading, as well as assisting with assigned homework, leading student learning groups targeted toward building fluency and reading comprehension.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides tutoring services in Language Arts and Reading.
  • Assists students with assigned homework in Language Arts and Reading.
  • Lead student learning groups targeted toward building fluency and reading comprehension.
  • Develop student reading and peer writing group activities.

Your Responsibilities as a Tutor

Please remember that while working in the community, you are representing La Sierra University. The school site you work for is relying upon you. You are serving the community's children, and your work is very important. Do not consider becoming an America Reads or America Counts tutor unless you are willing to commit yourself to the program, its goals and the children you are serving. In your role as a tutor, you will gain valuable experience, perform a valuable service to the community and help a child learn to read, or help a child learn math skills. You are still subject to the same guidelines and rules you would be if you were working on campus.

Requirements

  • Federal Work-study required
  • Reliable transportation to schools
  • Tutoring Times Available (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 2:30 - 6pm & Tuesday 1:30-6pm)
  • Must be a registered student at La Sierra University

Skills:

  • Excellent people skills, enthusiasm for helping adolescents, respectful attitude
  • Ability to work separately with student and/or within a larger context of student/tutor groups
  • Creative and enthusiastic when covering lesson plans
  • Attention to detail regarding paperwork and prompt arrival/departure to/from school site
  • Must be comfortable using technology such as Google Meets

Rate of Pay:  $25.00 per hour
