What are React Software Engineers?

React Software Engineers are developers who specialize in building user interfaces using the React library, a popular JavaScript framework maintained by Meta (formerly Facebook). They are responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining web applications with a focus on creating efficient and reusable UI components. Their expertise includes JavaScript, React concepts like JSX, state management, hooks, and often related tools such as Redux or React Router. React Software Engineers collaborate closely with designers, backend developers, and product managers to deliver seamless user experiences.

How does a React Software Engineer typically collaborate with designers and backend developers during a project?

As a React Software Engineer, you'll work closely with designers to translate UI/UX mockups into interactive web components, ensuring visual and functional accuracy. Collaboration with backend developers is also essential, as you'll integrate APIs and coordinate on data structures and endpoints. Effective communication and regular meetings help align everyone on project requirements, timelines, and potential blockers, leading to a smoother development process and higher-quality deliverables.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a React Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a React Software Engineer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, React.js, front-end development concepts, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, package managers (npm/yarn), and tools such as Redux for state management is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help engineers collaborate effectively and adapt to evolving project requirements. These skills and qualities are crucial to delivering high-quality, scalable user interfaces and maintaining efficient development workflows.

Job description

Job Description
We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
Enterprise Technology plays a critical part in shaping the future of mobility. If you're looking for the chance to leverage advanced technology to redefine the transportation landscape, enhance the customer experience and improve people's lives, this is the opportunity for you. Join us and challenge your IT expertise and analytical skills to help create vehicles that are as smart as you are.
In this Position...
As a Front-End Software Engineer supporting the Vehicle Dashboard product within the Global Own Engineering Team in Enterprise Technology, you will design and deliver scalable, secure, and customer-focused web applications using modern engineering practices and front-end technologies. You will collaborate with Product Owners, Product Managers, stakeholders, architects, and engineers to build solutions leveraging React.js, Next.js, and/or AEM, while integrating with microservices-based backend systems. Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is highly preferred.
Responsibilities
What you'll do...
  • Develop and maintain responsive, accessible (WCAG-compliant), and scalable front-end applications using React, Next.js, and modern web technologies.
  • Build and enhance reusable UI components and micro-frontend modules that deliver high-quality user experiences.
  • Implement front-end features and functionality based on Figma designs, ensuring consistency across devices and browsers.
  • Apply modern software engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, and code review processes to deliver reliable solutions.
  • Integrate front-end applications with APIs and cloud-based services to support business and customer needs.
  • Utilize AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot and Ford LLM to improve development efficiency and code quality.
  • Monitor and optimize application performance, accessibility, and user experience using tools such as Lighthouse and Dynatrace.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, architects, and engineers to translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve front-end and production issues across multiple browsers, devices, and environments.
  • Stay current with emerging front-end technologies, frameworks, and best practices while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
You'll Have..
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience developing and delivering modern web applications.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with React, Next.js, or comparable front-end frameworks, with a proven ability to build scalable and maintainable solutions.
  • Solid understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG) and experience implementing accessible, user-centric interfaces.
    Even better, you may have...
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience developing modern web applications using React, Next.js, or similar frontend frameworks.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript, including DOM manipulation and browser APIs.
  • Experience building and maintaining micro-frontend architectures for scalable enterprise applications.
  • Hands-on experience with Server-Side Rendering (SSR), Client-Side Rendering (CSR), and Static Site Generation (SSG).
  • Strong understanding of HTML5, CSS3, Tailwind CSS, responsive design, and modern CSS methodologies such as BEM and SMACSS.
  • Experience implementing state management solutions such as Redux, Zustand, or Flux.
  • Proficiency with modern frontend tooling including Node.js, NPM, Yarn, Webpack, and Babel.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality through unit, integration, acceptance, and end-to-end testing using tools such as Jest and Playwright.
  • Experience optimizing application performance with a strong understanding of Core Web Vitals, web performance best practices, and SEO principles.
  • Strong knowledge of web security standards, including OWASP Top 10, XSS, CSRF, CSP, OAuth 2.0, JWT, and secure coding practices.
  • Experience leveraging Design Systems to ensure consistency, scalability, accessibility, and reusable component development.
