React Native Development information

What is React Native development?

React Native development involves building mobile applications using the React Native framework, which allows developers to use JavaScript and React to create apps for both iOS and Android platforms. Unlike traditional native app development that requires separate codebases for each platform, React Native enables code sharing and faster development cycles. It is popular for its efficiency, performance, and active community support. React Native apps can access native device features and provide near-native performance with a single codebase.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a React Native developer?

To thrive as a React Native Developer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript, React, and mobile app development concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, Redux, RESTful APIs, and mobile testing frameworks is typically required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate and deliver high-quality user experiences. These skills ensure efficient development, maintainable code, and successful cross-platform mobile applications.

What are some common challenges React Native developers face when working on cross-platform mobile apps?

React Native developers often encounter challenges related to maintaining consistent performance and appearance across both iOS and Android platforms. Differences in native components, device hardware, and operating system updates can lead to unexpected bugs or UI inconsistencies. Additionally, integrating native modules or third-party libraries sometimes requires knowledge of native development in Objective-C, Swift, or Java. However, these challenges are balanced by a collaborative work environment, where developers frequently consult with designers, QA testers, and backend engineers to deliver seamless cross-platform experiences.

What is the difference between React Native Development vs React.js Development?

AspectReact Native DevelopmentReact.js Development
Primary FocusMobile app development for iOS and AndroidWeb application development
Required SkillsJavaScript, React, mobile UI/UX, native modulesJavaScript, React, HTML, CSS
Work EnvironmentMobile platforms, cross-platform toolsWeb browsers, web servers
Industry UsageMobile app companies, startups, enterprisesWeb development agencies, tech companies

React Native Development and React.js Development share core JavaScript and React skills but differ mainly in their focus: React Native targets mobile app creation, while React.js is used for web applications. Both roles are essential in modern development, often overlapping in skill sets but serving different platforms and project needs.

Job description

The Opportunity
Pain reduction isn't a vanity metric at Hinge Health - it's the mission. The Outcomes pod owns the member-facing surfaces that make clinical progress visible (pain logging, health assessments, outcomes visualization) and the Assessment Service, the company-wide platform that powers every structured survey and PROM across Migraine, Perisurgical, Women's Pelvic Health, and beyond. As the Engineering Manager for this team, you'll lead 8 engineers at the intersection of consumer product craft, clinical measurement rigor, and platform engineering - turning clinical signal into product bets and operating the infrastructure the entire organization depends on.
What You'll Accomplish
In your first 3 months, you will:
  • Build trusted partnerships with your PM, Data Scientist, and cross-neighborhood engineering leads. Understand the full stack - from the React Native client (phoenix) through phoenix-bff to assessment-service - and complete your first code reviews and PR merges.
  • Audit the current Assessment Service roadmap, catalog inbound requests from partner pods (Migraine, Perisurgical, Enrollment), and establish a transparent prioritization framework that balances internal roadmap with external partner needs.
  • Immerse yourself in the team's experimentation culture: review active A/B tests on pain logging cadence and member engagement, and set expectations for rigorous go/no-go criteria going forward.

In your first 6 months, you will:
  • Ship at least one experiment that demonstrably moves a core clinical metric - pain reduction, survey engagement, or PSFS improvement - and build the analytical discipline so results are trusted org-wide.
  • Define and publish contribution patterns for the Assessment Service so partner pods can extend the platform without creating bottlenecks, reducing ad-hoc cross-team coordination overhead.
  • Deepen the pod's AI-native development practices - expanding use of autonomous agents, CI-enforced harness engineering patterns, and developer tooling that increases engineering throughput.

In your first year, you will:
  • Own the outcomes product surface end-to-end: pain logging UX, progress tracking, outcomes visualization, and health assessment experiences that members love and clinicians trust.
  • Ensure Outcomes data is a durable company asset - well-modeled, well-documented, and wired into the clinical and commercial reporting stack - not just a sprint metric.
  • Grow and develop a high-performing team, raising the engineering bar through hiring, mentorship, and career-ladder progression while sustaining a culture that values both clinical impact and platform reliability.
Who You Are
  • A builder who stays close to the code. You're a hands-on engineering leader (~15% IC time) who reviews PRs, contributes architecture input, and earns trust through technical credibility - not just org-chart authority. You embody Hinge Health's Lead at All Levels principle.
  • A systems thinker with product instincts. You can reason across service architecture, data modeling, and client-side UX tradeoffs - and you know when a platform decision will ripple across a dozen downstream consumers.
  • An experiment-minded operator. You don't just ship features; you design bets, define success criteria, and hold the team accountable to outcomes. You exemplify Hustle - measuring yourself by results and impact, not actions or good intentions.
  • A cross-functional partner. You communicate clearly across engineering, clinical, data science, and product teams to align on shared goals - demonstrating Effective Communication and Accountability.
Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 3+ years of experience managing a team of 5+ engineers in a product or platform engineering environment
  • Full-stack or backend-heavy engineering background, with the ability to reason about service architecture, data modeling, and client-side UX tradeoffs
  • Experience owning a shared platform or service consumed by multiple internal teams - with the judgment to balance internal roadmap with external partner needs
  • Track record of running experiments and reasoning about outcomes metrics - not just shipping features
Preferred Requirements
  • Clinical or Health Data Experience: Familiarity with PROMs, clinical outcomes measurement, or regulated health data (HIPAA); ability to partner credibly with clinical stakeholders on what to measure and how
  • Assessment or Survey Systems: Experience building or operating structured data collection systems - survey flows, configurable templates, response validation, and downstream data pipelines
  • Server-Driven UI / Configurable Layouts: Familiarity with SDUI patterns for forms and assessment experiences; bonus if in a mobile context
  • React Native / Mobile: Working knowledge of React Native or equivalent mobile development experience
  • AI-Native Development Practices: Active use of Cursor, Claude Code, or equivalent tools as part of the engineering workflow; experience building or maintaining CI-enforced harness engineering patterns
