What is an RBT?

An RBT, or Registered Behavior Technician, is a paraprofessional who works under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to implement behavior intervention plans, often with individuals diagnosed with autism or other developmental disorders. You can become an RBT with no prior experience in the field, as the main requirements are a high school diploma, completion of a 40-hour training course, passing a competency assessment, and clearing a background check. Many employers are willing to hire candidates with no experience and provide the required training. This makes RBT a great entry-level position for those interested in starting a career in applied behavior analysis or working with individuals with special needs.

What can I expect during the first few weeks as a new Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) with no prior experience?

As a new RBT without prior experience, you can expect to spend your initial weeks undergoing comprehensive training, shadowing experienced RBTs, and becoming familiar with individualized client programs. You'll learn how to implement behavior intervention plans, collect data, and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members. Support and supervision from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) are standard, ensuring you build confidence and competence in your role before working independently with clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) with no prior experience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) without prior experience, you generally need a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of a 40-hour training program, and passing the RBT certification exam. Familiarity with data collection software and basic understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles are also important. Strong communication skills, patience, and a compassionate attitude help you effectively support clients and collaborate with supervising Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). These skills and qualifications ensure you can provide consistent, ethical, and effective behavioral interventions for individuals with developmental or behavioral challenges.

While prior experience in behavior analysis is not mandatory, candidates must demonstrate understanding of the RBT task list and adhere to ethical guidelines, with supervision during the initial certification period.

Is it easy to get hired as a registered behavior technician?
