What does a Raspberry Pi Developer do?

A Raspberry Pi Developer specializes in creating software and hardware solutions using the Raspberry Pi, a small and affordable computer popular for prototyping and educational projects. Their work often involves programming in languages like Python or C++, integrating sensors and peripherals, and developing applications for IoT, automation, robotics, or multimedia projects. They may also design and build custom hardware interfaces or troubleshoot hardware/software integration issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Raspberry Pi Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Raspberry Pi Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in Python, C/C++, or JavaScript), experience with Linux-based operating systems, and a solid understanding of hardware interfaces and electronics. Familiarity with the Raspberry Pi platform, GPIO pin management, and tools like SSH, as well as relevant certifications in embedded systems or IoT, are highly valuable. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help developers design innovative solutions and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for building reliable, scalable projects and maximizing the capabilities of Raspberry Pi in real-world applications.

What are some common challenges Raspberry Pi Developers face when integrating hardware and software components?

Raspberry Pi Developers often encounter challenges related to hardware-software integration, such as ensuring compatibility between various sensors, peripherals, and the Raspberry Pi operating system. Troubleshooting connectivity issues, driver support, and power management are also common hurdles. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, is crucial to identify and resolve integration issues efficiently. Staying current with the latest updates and community-supported libraries can help mitigate some of these challenges.

What is the difference between Raspberry Pi Developer vs Arduino Developer?

AspectRaspberry Pi DeveloperArduino Developer
Required CredentialsBasic programming skills, Linux knowledge, sometimes certifications in embedded systemsBasic electronics, programming skills, often no formal certification required
Work EnvironmentLinux-based systems, software development, prototyping projectsHardware-focused, embedded systems, electronics prototyping

Description

Who We Are:

Are you ready to work at a dynamic institution that believes in higher education with lower obstacles? Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology (now known as Franklin Cummings Tech) is a nationally accredited non-profit, technical college serving Massachusetts. The college was seeded in 1791 with funds from the estate of Benjamin Franklin given to the City of Boston to proliferate access to apprenticeship and entrepreneurship. Today, that legacy has evolved into an accredited college that delivers accessible tech and trade education to level the playing field for aspiring talent.

With a mission to deliver transformative technical and trade education that leads to economic advancement, Franklin Cummings Tech offers a unique mix of certificates and degrees that appeal to enterprising students from Eastern Massachusetts and respond to employer demand for a well-prepared workforce. Intentional partnerships with the industries we serve coupled with high graduation and job placement rates, recently attracted the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the college from the Cummings Foundation, helping to spur incredible growth in the past four years.

Franklin Cummings Tech educates more than 1,000 learners annually across three student types: 1) certificate and degree seekers, 2) continuing education enrollees, and 3) early college students. As evidence that our mission holds resonance student enrollment is up and Fall 2027 applications have soared 16% year over year.

We seek optimistic, data-informed, and dedicated colleagues who are eager to increase student success outcomes and boost total enrollment to 1,500 learners by 2030. Join us in this mission-driven work!

Position Summary:

The Department of Engineering Technology is seeking applications for a part-time adjunct instructor position in Engineering Technology. The candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in building energy management and automated building control systems. We are seeking a qualified and enthusiastic Lecturer to teach CT148: C++ and Python Programming (4 Credits). The successful candidate will deliver high-quality instruction in modern programming languages with an emphasis on embedded systems development using Raspberry Pi and Arduino platforms. The role involves combining theoretical instruction with practical laboratory sessions to prepare students for real-world embedded systems applications. The position requires on-site and hybrid modes of delivery of coursework.

Course Description:

CT148 introduces students to two contemporary programming languages, C++ and Python, focusing on their use in embedded systems. Students learn the syntax, programming concepts, and practical applications of both languages before applying them to develop embedded solutions using Raspberry Pi and Arduino. The course explores Python for high-level control, data processing, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications, while C++ is used for low-level hardware interaction and real-time processing. Through hands-on projects, students integrate sensors, actuators, and communication protocols to gain practical experience in embedded systems development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions for CT148.
  • Teach programming fundamentals and advanced concepts in C++ and Python.
  • Guide students in developing embedded systems applications using Raspberry Pi and Arduino.
  • Supervise practical projects involving sensors, actuators, and communication protocols.
  • Develop course materials, laboratory exercises, assignments, and assessments.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Maintain a safe, engaging, and collaborative learning environment.
  • Stay current with developments in embedded systems, IoT technologies, and programming practices.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Strong proficiency in C++ and Python programming.
  • Experience with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and embedded systems development.
  • Knowledge of IoT concepts, sensor integration, and communication protocols.
  • Previous teaching or training experience is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

The salary for this position is $1,178.00 per credit.

Please note: Franklin Cummings Tech is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position now or in the future. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on an ongoing basis without sponsorship to be considered for this position at Franklin Cummings Tech.
