What is a range controller?

Range controllers are professionals responsible for managing and overseeing the safe operation of firing ranges, often in military, law enforcement, or civilian training environments. They coordinate range activities, ensure compliance with safety protocols, and monitor all personnel and equipment during exercises or live-fire events. Their duties may also include setting up targets, maintaining communication with participants, and responding to emergencies. A range controller plays a key role in preventing accidents and ensuring that all range activities run smoothly and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a range controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Range Controller, you need a solid understanding of safety protocols, range operations, and regulatory compliance, often supported by relevant certifications or military/law enforcement experience. Familiarity with radio communication systems, range management software, and incident reporting tools is typically required. Strong decision-making, attention to detail, and clear communication are vital soft skills for coordinating activities and ensuring safety on the range. These skills and qualifications are crucial for maintaining a safe environment, preventing accidents, and ensuring smooth range operations.

What are some common challenges faced by range controllers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Range Controllers often face challenges such as coordinating multiple simultaneous activities, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, and communicating effectively with diverse teams, including range users, maintenance staff, and emergency services. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Regular training, clear standard operating procedures, and the use of advanced communication systems can greatly aid in maintaining safety and efficiency on the range.

Job description

About Range Energy
Range Energy builds powered trailers that help electrify heavy duty trucking without requiring fleets to replace their tractors. We solve real world problems with real hardware.

We move fast, take ownership, and hold a high bar for execution. We value people who are low ego and team first, calm under pressure, direct and respectful communicators, willing to roll up their sleeves, and focused on solutions, not drama.

We operate with high integrity. We do what we say we'll do, we're transparent about risks and tradeoffs, and we build trust through consistent follow through.

The work is hands on. Sometimes messy. Often fast. Always meaningful.

Founded in 2021, Range is led by experienced EV operators from Tesla, Zoox, Honda, and other leading OEMs. We are backed by strong investors and focused on building hardware that fleets will actually use.

If you like building real things, solving hard problems, and working with low drama, high output teammates, you will fit here.
Role Summary
Range Energy is looking for a Controller to build and own the company's accounting function. Range is at an inflection point: we are preparing for start of production, scaling our supply chain, and readying the company for public company reporting standards, including a PCAOB audit of our historical financials. You will be the first dedicated accounting hire, reporting directly to the VP Finance, and you will own the close, the audit, technical accounting, and the systems that support all of it.

Today the accounting stack is QuickBooks Online supported by an outsourced accounting firm. You will take ownership of that environment, raise the bar on close discipline and documentation, and lead the evaluation and migration to an ERP suited for a production hardware company. As we approach the start of production, you will stand up cost accounting, inventory, and revenue processes from the ground up.

This is a builder's role. Success requires comfort operating with autonomy, making recommendations to the wider organization, and creating processes where none exist today.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the monthly close end to end, producing timely, accurate GAAP financial statements with supporting documentation that holds up to audit scrutiny

  • Lead the company through its first PCAOB audit, serving as the primary point of contact for auditors and driving preparation of schedules, reconciliations, and supporting workpapers

  • Own technical accounting positions and memos, including complex equity instruments, warrants, revenue recognition, and stock based compensation

  • Manage the day to day accounting environment, including AP, payroll coordination, expense management, and the relationship with our outsourced accounting partner

  • Lead the implementation of a new ERP system to replace QuickBooks Online, owning migration planning, data integrity, and cutover as the company scales into production

  • Build cost accounting, inventory, and revenue processes ahead of start of production, working closely with supply chain and operations

  • Establish internal controls and documentation appropriate for a company preparing for public company reporting requirements

  • Support financial reporting deliverables for the board, investors, and external stakeholders

  • Hire and develop the accounting team as the company grows

Required Qualifications
  • CPA strongly preferred; candidates without an active CPA must bring equivalent depth of technical accounting and audit experience

  • Public company experience, public accounting audit experience, or both. You know what a PCAOB audit demands and what public company reporting requires, because you have lived it

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of a monthly close

  • Strong command of US GAAP, including experience researching and documenting technical accounting positions

  • Experience operating in a lean environment where you are both the strategist and the person doing the work

  • High attention to detail with a bias toward simple, correct, defensible output

  • Direct, clear communicator who is comfortable working with auditors, executives, and cross functional teams

Preferred / Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience taking a company through an IPO, deSPAC, or other transition to public company reporting

  • Hardware, manufacturing, or automotive industry experience, including cost accounting and inventory

  • ERP implementation experience, especially NetSuite

  • Familiarity with equity administration platforms (e.g. Carta) and modern spend management tools (e.g. Ramp)

  • Experience managing outsourced accounting relationships

Other Requirements
  • While we appreciate the importance of schedule flexibility, it's essential to note that the nature of this role necessitates a regular and consistent onsite presence

  • Some travel may be required to support audit, banking, and transaction related activities

  • In your first 6 to 9 months, success would include a repeatable monthly close with audit ready documentation, a PCAOB audit that is on track or complete for the required historical periods, and meaningful progress on the ERP implementation. This role has a clear growth path as the finance organization scales with the company.

Compensation & Benefits

Range Energy's compensation package includes a competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and a generous benefits package. The salary range for Mountain View, CA based applicants is between $150,000 - $215,000 annually. The total compensation will be determined based on multiple factors including domain knowledge, experience and location.
