What is a ranch manager?

A ranch manager is a farm professional who is responsible for the daily operations on a ranch. Ranch managers raise, care for, and in some cases, oversee the slaughter of livestock. They may also maintain machinery and structures that house animals, as well as purchase feed, equipment, and supplies. Ranch managers must also ensure that all animals are being raised to meet market standards and applicable regulations.

What does a ranch manager do?

A Ranch Manager oversees the daily operations of a ranch, which may include managing livestock, crops, staff, equipment, and budgeting. They are responsible for the health and productivity of animals, maintenance of facilities, and often handle purchasing, sales, and marketing of ranch products. Ranch Managers may also implement breeding programs, ensure compliance with regulations, and address environmental concerns such as land conservation. Their role is crucial to the profitability and sustainability of the ranch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a ranch manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ranch Manager, you need strong knowledge of livestock management, pasture maintenance, and business operations, often supported by a degree in agriculture or animal science. Familiarity with ranch management software, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance is typically required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are critical soft skills for overseeing staff and coordinating daily operations. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring the ranch runs efficiently, sustainably, and profitably.

What are some common challenges ranch managers face in balancing livestock health with budget constraints?

Ranch Managers often need to make strategic decisions that ensure the health and productivity of their livestock while staying within tight budgetary limits. This includes prioritizing expenditures on feed, veterinary care, and equipment maintenance, as well as adapting to fluctuations in market prices and weather conditions. Effective Ranch Managers regularly monitor herd health, implement preventive care, and seek cost-efficient solutions, all while maintaining compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Collaborating with veterinarians, suppliers, and ranch staff is key to overcoming these challenges and maintaining a profitable operation.

You’ll help guests arrive smoothly, answer questions, coordinate daily plans, manage reservations, and make sure the little details are taken care of. You’ll work closely with the Front Desk, Concierge, Experience, Housekeeping, and other departments to create a stay that feels effortless and personal.

This is a great role for someone who is warm, confident, organized, tech-savvy, and genuinely enjoys helping people.

If you love hospitality, thrive on variety, and want to work somewhere the scenery is as memorable as the guests, come join us.

What You’ll DoGuest Experience

  • Help anticipate guest needs and exceed expectations throughout their stay.
  • Support guest itineraries, activities, dining, transportation, and daily logistics.
  • Answer questions about Sorrel, Moab, local attractions, events, and outdoor adventures.
  • Manage guest requests and communicate follow-up clearly with the appropriate teams.
  • Resolve guest concerns quickly, professionally, and thoughtfully.
  • Safely transport guests and luggage to and from their rooms when needed.
  • Help create memorable experiences from arrival through departure.

  • Issue room keys and maintain accurate guest and room records.
  • Process check-ins and check-outs.
  • Present guest statements and accurately process payments.
  • Assist with billing questions and account requests.

  • Follow Sorrel's standard operating procedures and service standards.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and guest services.
  • Communicate proposed changes and operational needs to management.
  • Work closely with Housekeeping, Maintenance, Reservations, and Experience teams.
  • Take direction from multiple managers while effectively balancing competing priorities.
  • Step in and help wherever needed to keep the operation running smoothly.
Be Part of the Bigger Picture

At Sorrel, we want team members who don't simply follow a checklist—they notice things, ask questions, and look for ways to make the experience better.

You’ll be encouraged to:

  • Question outdated processes.
  • Suggest new ideas and solutions.
  • Help improve SOPs and daily operations.
  • Support your teammates.

  • High ethical standards and professionalism.
  • Confident, personable, and well-presented.
  • Ability to work effectively with people with different personalities and backgrounds.

  • A genuine interest in the outdoors and the Moab area is a plus.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Benefits & Perks
  • Employee discounts for friends and family
  • Affordable on-site housing for non-local candidates, subject to availability

Bring your hospitality skills, your curiosity, and your love of people. We’ll provide the river, the mountains, and plenty of adventure.
