What is a RAN Solution Architect?

RAN Solution Architects are professionals who design and oversee the implementation of Radio Access Networks (RAN) for mobile communication systems. They work with technologies like 4G, 5G, and sometimes legacy systems, ensuring optimal network coverage, capacity, and performance. Their responsibilities include creating technical solutions, collaborating with engineers and customers, and ensuring that network designs meet both technical and business requirements. RAN Solution Architects play a critical role in telecom companies, bridging the gap between customer needs and technical execution. They must stay updated on evolving wireless standards and technologies to deliver effective solutions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a RAN Solution Architect?

To thrive as a RAN Solution Architect, you need deep expertise in radio access network technologies, wireless communication protocols, and a degree in telecommunications or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as network planning software, simulation tools, and industry certifications like those from Nokia, Ericsson, or Huawei is typically required. Strong problem-solving, stakeholder management, and effective communication skills are essential for translating technical requirements into practical solutions. These skills ensure robust network design, efficient deployment, and alignment with business and technical needs in complex telecom environments.

How does a RAN Solution Architect collaborate with cross-functional teams during network solution development and deployment?

A Ran Solution Architect works closely with various teams, including radio network planners, core network engineers, project managers, and customer technical staff. Collaboration often involves translating customer requirements into technical solutions, guiding the design process, and ensuring alignment with overall network strategies. Effective communication and coordination are essential, as the architect is responsible for integrating RAN components with other network elements and resolving technical challenges that arise during deployment. Regular meetings, technical workshops, and joint problem-solving sessions are common parts of the work environment.

Job description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Solutions Architect to partner with our Telecommunications and Media customers. In this highly technical and customer-facing role, you will engage directly with customers to understand their business drivers, assess technology needs, and design reliable, cost-effective, and scalable cloud architectures on AWS - including AI/ML, cloud-native network functions, and edge workloads.
As a trusted customer advocate, you will help organizations understand best practices around advanced cloud and AI solutions, provide strategic guidance on migrating and modernizing existing workloads, and accelerate adoption of generative AI across network operations, customer experience, and content delivery. You will build deep relationships with senior technical leaders to enable them as cloud advocates within their companies.
You will drive revenue growth by formulating and executing technical strategies in partnership with the AWS Sales team. This involves mobilizing internal AWS resources (including Specialist SAs, ProServe, and the partner ecosystem) to ensure successful application builds, migrations, and AI deployments onto AWS. Additionally, you will capture and share best-practice knowledge across AWS, including authoring customer-facing content like whitepapers, blog posts, and reference architectures.
The ideal candidate has a passion for cloud computing and AI with a proven track record in technology consulting, solutions architecture, or pre-sales engineering - ideally within telecommunications, media, or enterprise technology. You must be broadly competent across infrastructure, security, DevOps, databases, app development, and analytics, with deep expertise in at least two areas. Experience with generative AI, network transformation, or telco-specific workloads is highly valued. The ability to connect technology to measurable business value is critical.
Key job responsibilities
* Serve as the primary technical advisor for Telco and Media customers on their cloud transformation and AI adoption journeys.
* Design and architect large-scale, distributed systems spanning on-premises, hybrid, and cloud-native environments.
* Guide customers on generative AI use cases - including agentic voice systems, intelligent network operations, subscriber personalization, and AI-powered customer care.
*Drive business engagements to develop technical strategies for complex enterprise and telco workload migrations (5G core, OSS/BSS, RAN, media streaming).
*Educate customers on the value proposition of AWS with deep architectural discussions, ensuring designs for resiliency, security, cost optimization, and AI-readiness.
* Build deep relationships across C-level, engineering leadership, and architecture teams to become the customer's trusted advisor.
* Collaborate across AWS teams (Specialist SAs, ProServe, Product, Partners) to drive and shape repeatable solutions for telco and media outcomes.
* Assist Partners in designing and implementing large-scale network transformation programs, including cloud-native network functions and edge deployments.
* Influence AWS service roadmap by acting as a liaison between customers, service engineering teams, and support.
* Capture and share best-practice knowledge via whitepapers, blogs, reference architectures, and internal mechanisms.
* Represent and promote AWS within the Telecommunications, Media, and Service Provider communities through workshops, conferences, and public speaking.
A day in the life
In this role, your typical day involves partnering with Telco and Media customers, AWS Sales teams, and internal groups to craft highly scalable, resilient cloud architectures that solve real business challenges - from 5G network modernization to AI-driven subscriber experiences.
You'll connect your technical expertise to tangible solutions: designing cloud-native reference architectures, prototyping generative AI applications, and helping customers build their path from proof-of-concept to production. A core part of your role is acting as a trusted advisor, shaping strategies to broaden AWS adoption and establish AI foundations across customer organizations.
Your creativity will be channeled into developing new architectural patterns, best practices, and technical content shared across AWS and with customers. You'll evangelize AWS technology through workshops, user groups, and public speaking.
Your day balances customer meetings, hands-on solution work, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing. The AWS Solutions Architecture team provides self-paced learning, instructor-led training, hands-on projects, and mentoring to expand your expertise across AWS's growing portfolio - including generative AI, edge computing, and industry-specific services.
About the team
The AWS Telco team within AWS Industries is committed to helping telecommunications customers enable their digital transformation.
