What is rally racing?

A Rally Racing job involves participating in or supporting off-road and on-road timed motorsport events. Roles can include being a driver, co-driver (navigator), mechanic, engineer, or part of a support crew. Drivers navigate challenging terrains at high speeds, while co-drivers provide crucial pace notes for guidance. Mechanics and engineers ensure vehicles are optimized for performance and durability. Success in rally racing requires teamwork, quick decision-making, and in-depth knowledge of vehicle handling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in rally racing?

To excel in rally racing, you need advanced driving skills, quick reflexes, deep knowledge of vehicle mechanics, and often a racing license from a recognized motorsport authority. Familiarity with in-car navigation systems, GPS tracking, and rally-specific equipment such as pace notes is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and stress management skills are crucial for collaborating effectively with co-drivers and support crews. These abilities help ensure safety, peak performance, and adaptability in the challenging, fast-paced environment of rally events.

What are the typical work conditions and daily responsibilities for a rally racer?

Rally racers often work in highly dynamic and unpredictable environments, spending their days traveling to various racing locations, conducting pre-race vehicle checks, and participating in practice runs or team strategy meetings. A typical schedule includes collaborating closely with co-drivers to review and update pace notes, debriefing with mechanics to fine-tune vehicles, and participating in both timed racing stages and service intervals for repairs. Work conditions can involve challenging weather, rough terrains, and long hours, especially during multi-day rallies. Teamwork is essential, as racers regularly coordinate with support teams, sponsors, and event organizers to ensure each race day runs smoothly. Success in this role requires adaptability, discipline, and a passion for motorsport.

Job description

In 1901, Henry Ford design and built the racecar called "Sweepstakes." On October 10 that year, he drove Sweepstakes against Alexander Winton, a famous racer and builder. Against all odds, Ford won. That was the beginning โ€“ "the race that changed the world" โ€“ and it continues today. From our victories at Le Mans in 1966 and again fifty years later in 2016, to championships in NASCAR, World Rally Championship, Off-Road, Sports Cars, NHRA, and other series across the globe, the spirit of Henry Ford lives with us every day through our motorsports efforts around the world.

Ford Racing is seeking a talented, committed engineer to be a part of their motorsports team as the Performance Engineering Manager.

In this position

The rapid growth and increasing complexity of Ford Racingโ€™s high-performance road, track, and off-road programs demand a visionary leader to steer our Performance Engineering strategy. As the Performance Engineering Manager (LL5), you will lead Ford Racingโ€™s elite competition performance engineering team.

In this role, you will oversee vehicle dynamics, aerodynamic development, advanced simulation, trackside engineering, and data analysis to maximize the on-track and off-road competitiveness of our race cars. You will collaborate with elite global racing teams, tier-1 technical partners, and internal Ford engineering teams to win world-class races and championships, while seamlessly facilitating "Race-to-Road" and "Road-to-Race" technology transfer.

This role is hybrid and requires at least 4 days onsite in either Allen Park, MI (preferred) or Concord, NC. Relocation support is available.
