Assists the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in ensuring effective broad scope radiation safety services to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centers and affiliated hospitals. Monitors and plans operational services in support of clinical and research uses of radiation sources. Performs quality assurance audits to ensure compliance with policies and regulations. Provides technical assistance and expertise in the treatment of patients undergoing brachytherapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy. Respond to emergencies as needed, taking on-call on a rotating basis.Job Description:
- Under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), oversees the operational aspects of the radiation safety program to verify compliance with radiation-related regulations, permits, and policies. Ensures that the program is implemented in compliance with applicable policies and regulations and in accordance with commitments to affiliated hospitals. (essential)
- Develops and implements a quality assessment and improvement program. Conducts periodic audits of clinical and research uses of radiation sources. Makes recommendations to the Radiation Protection Officer for and implements program improvements. (essential)
- Schedules radiation safety services. Assigns tasks to radiation safety staff to meet clinical and regulatory obligations. (essential)
- Aids physicians with therapeutic radiopharmaceutical and brachytherapy administrations, perform associated documentation and auditing, provides patients with safety precautions to take at discharge. Loads implant sources in operating room, provides safety instructions to staff and performs implant surveys and inventories. Provides assistance with preparation and decontamination of inpatient rooms. (essential)
- Prepares training materials and conducts training sessions. Develops and delivers training materials and instructions for nursing units, fluoroscopy training for non-radiologists, ancillary staff, and training for instructing patients. (essential)
- Records all information with the utmost accuracy and precision. Documents and analyzes data and maintains meticulous records with close attention to detail to ensure regulatory compliance. Prepares summary reports to demonstrate regulatory compliance, for Radiation Safety Committee meetings, and as requested by the RSO. (essential)
- Performs routine and development work in support of a multifaceted radiation safety program. Provides guidance to junior staff. Assists in identifying and solving unusual problems, develops standards and reviews technical documents for accuracy and precision. (essential)
- Orders radioactive materials (except for Nuclear Medicine) in compliance with permit limits or clinical needs. Verifies accuracy of radiopharmaceutical doses and brachytherapy sources for patient treatments. Ships, packages, receives and documents receipt of radioactive packages in accordance with federal and state regulations. Maintains DOT certification to package and ship radioactive materials. - Responds to emergency situations such as personnel contamination or radioactive material spills. Participate in emergency response training and drills as requested by BIDMC Emergency Response Committee. Takes 'on-call' rotation (24-hour coverage) and responds to Code Orange pages or patient queries. Implement all security measures required by NRC or State regulations. (essential)
- Serves As a Backup to the Radiation Safety Officer. (essential)
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in medical/health physics or related discipline required. Bachelor’s degree in medical/health physics or related discipline with additional years of experience in medical radiation safety or certification (ABHP, NRRPT or equivalent) may be considered.
- Minimum 5–8 years (depending on education and certification) related work experience required in a clinical radiation safety program.
- Must pass investigative background check satisfactory to departmental, Medical Center, State, and Federal regulatory policies and standards.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in medical radiation safety in large hospitals or academic medical centers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NRC and/or Agreement State radiation protection regulations.

Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
Age based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal:Birth to 6 months, Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 - over.
Social/Environmental Requirements:
Work requires close attention to task for work to be accurately completed. Intermittent breaks during the work day do not compromise the work.
Work requires constant response to changing circumstances and using new information to adjust approach and to quickly respond to new needs.
Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions
- Daily: Radiation.
- Several times a week: Exposure to dust,gas,fumes,steam,chemicals, Protective equipment required(Respirator,earplugs,mask,gloves,eyewear etc), Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or airborne pathogens, Potential exposure to infectious diseases and/or bloodborne pathogens.
- Several times a month: Noise(need to shout to be heard), Vibration.
- Seasonally: Extreme cold(below 32 degrees), Extreme heat(above 100 degrees), Work outdoors(no effective protection from weather), Work at heights(such as scaffolding or ladders).
Health Care Status: HCW1: Regular, day-to-day contact; both face-to-face and hands-on (having close contact within three feet for at least five minutes). Examples: physicians, clinical nurses, phlebotomist, medical assistants, PFT tech, and x-ray tech.- Health Care Worker Status may vary by department
Sensory Requirements:

Pay Range:
$125,008.00 USD - $140,005.00 USDThe pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time.
