Radar jobs focus on using radar equipment for a variety of purposes, including cross-referencing with satellite images to gather data on the weather. You can find these jobs under names like radar engineer, a radar technician, or Doppler weather radar technician. In these roles, you may collect a signal from multiple sources to gain more intelligence about a subject being scanned and help model its future movement. Radar is common in both military and civilian fields, and you can find jobs in both. More recently, vehicles have started using radar to detect other vehicles and automatically adjust to their presence, so it is also possible to find a radar job in the automotive industry.
| Aspect | Radar | Sonar |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Use | Detects objects via radio waves in air or space | Detects objects via sound waves underwater |
| Work Environment | Air, space, weather monitoring | Underwater, marine environments |
| Required Certifications | Typically involves electronics and radar operation certifications | Requires sonar operation and marine safety certifications |
| Industry Usage | Aerospace, defense, meteorology | Maritime, submarine, underwater exploration |
Radar and Sonar are both detection technologies but serve different environments. Radar uses radio waves to detect objects in the air or space, while Sonar employs sound waves for underwater detection. Their applications, certifications, and industries differ, making each suited for specific operational needs.

The Radar Systems Engineer (Programs) serves as the technical owner and primary customer‑facing authority for assigned radar systems, including Indra PSR2D (Primary Surveillance Radar) and Indra MSSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar). This role works with field engineering execution and ensures successful installation, integration, commissioning, and acceptance of radar systems delivered to the FAA.
Working closely with the Program Manager, the Technical Delivery Manager will act as the main technical point of contact, ensuring compliance with contractual, technical, and regulatory requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
Primary Technical Contact: Serve as the primary technical point of contact (POC) on the Radar System Replacement (RSR) program for customers and internal stakeholders, driving technical discussions, resolving issues, and ensuring alignment on architecture, integration approach, and deployment methodology.
Radar Subject Matter Expert: Serve as the Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Indra Primary and Secondary Radar systems, having deep-dive technical discussions with customers, owning technical implementation, supporting solution development, and ensuring accurate representation of system capabilities, architecture, and deployment considerations.
Field Engineering Execution: Support field engineering activities, including installation, integration, testing, commissioning, and final acceptance of radar systems.
CDRL Management: Own and support the full lifecycle of CDRL deliverables, including content development, technical review, quality assurance, and final submission in compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
Baseline & Configuration Management:
Establish and manage the system configuration baseline for all radar program components, ensuring alignment between design, deployment, and delivered system states across all sites.
Manage the configuration management (CM) process, including identification, control, status accounting, and audits of hardware, software, and documentation baselines.
Customer & FAA Interface: Act as the primary technical interface with the FAA, addressing technical issues, supporting acceptance activities, and managing/supporting customer-facing Change Control Board (CCB) meetings.
Compliance & Standards: Ensure systems comply with contractual requirements, technical specifications, quality standards, and delivery timelines. Maintain deep familiarity with applicable FAA regulations, orders, advisories, and technical guidance, particularly related to the RSR program.
Cross-Functional Coordination: Coordinate with program management, internal engineering teams, and external partners to support successful project execution.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
Experience: Previous experience in field engineering, systems engineering, or technical project management, preferably with radar or RF‑based systems.
Experience with technical teams in a field or customer‑facing environment.
Technical Skills:
Ability to interpret technical documentation and CAD drawings, including system schematics and installation layouts.
Familiarity with RF test equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators) preferred.
Communication: Strong communication skills and a proven ability to work directly with customers and regulatory stakeholders such as the FAA.
Travel: Ability to travel to customer sites as required.
