What is a quoting engineer?

Quoting Engineers are professionals who analyze technical specifications and customer requirements to prepare cost estimates, proposals, and quotations for products or services. They work closely with sales, engineering, and manufacturing teams to ensure that quotes are accurate and competitive. Their responsibilities often include interpreting blueprints, selecting appropriate materials, calculating labor and production costs, and addressing customer inquiries. Quoting Engineers play a key role in helping companies win business by providing timely and precise quotes.

What are some common challenges faced by quoting engineers when preparing accurate cost estimates?

Quoting Engineers often face the challenge of balancing speed and accuracy when preparing cost estimates for complex projects. They must thoroughly analyze technical drawings and specifications, coordinate with various departments like procurement and engineering, and stay updated on material costs and market trends. Tight deadlines and incomplete information from clients can add to the complexity, so strong communication and organizational skills are crucial. Over time, experience helps Quoting Engineers develop strategies to gather necessary information efficiently and minimize the risk of errors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quoting engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quoting Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, cost estimation, and project management, often supported by an engineering degree or relevant technical experience. Familiarity with CAD software, ERP systems, and quoting tools, along with certifications in project management or cost estimation, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you produce accurate quotes and collaborate with sales and engineering teams. These skills ensure precise and competitive quotations, supporting successful project bids and client satisfaction.

PRODUCTION COORDINATOR

Full Time Sales Tempe, AZ, US

Salary Range: $85,000.00 To $110,000.00 Annually

Position Summary

The Job Coordinator is the technical and commercial link between customers, outside sales, engineering, and production. This role develops accurate quotes and executable work plans for heavy-equipment refurbishments and new-part manufacturing, then coordinates each job through the L&H operating system from order entry through completion and invoicing. The successful candidate combines strong technical judgment with customer service, adaptability, ownership, and a positive, solutions-oriented mindset.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate, timely quotes for refurbishment, repair, and new-part manufacturing opportunities, including scope, labor, material, outside processing, lead time, and commercial assumptions.
  • Partner closely with outside sales to clarify customer requirements, develop solutions, support pricing strategy, communicate status, and respond quickly to changing priorities.
  • Develop practical work plans and job scopes for refurbishments and new manufacturing, translating customer needs, drawings, specifications, inspection findings, and technical requirements into clear production steps.
  • Create and maintain sales orders, work orders, quotes, job data, and related records in the company operating system; ensure information is complete, accurate, and usable by downstream departments.
  • Coordinate daily with internal customers including Purchasing, Shipping/Receiving, Machinists, Welders, Mechanics, Engineering, Quality, and other support functions to remove roadblocks and keep jobs moving.
  • Monitor work-in-process, job costs, material status, outside services, schedule commitments, and on-time delivery risk; elevate issues early and drive timely resolution.
  • Review completed job costs and scope changes to support accurate final pricing and invoicing, while communicating significant variances to sales and leadership.
  • Build, update, and maintain engineering masters and job documentation as required to improve repeatability, quality, estimating accuracy, and future job execution.
  • Support quality expectations for L&H parts, products, and services; help resolve warranty matters, customer concerns, and job-related issues professionally and promptly.
  • Champion safe work practices and L&H mission, vision, and values while contributing to a collaborative, accountable, and customer-focused culture.
Required Qualifications
  • Five or more years of relevant experience in heavy industrial manufacturing, large mechanical repair, mining equipment, or related applications.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and ability to understand mechanical systems, manufacturing processes, drawings, specifications, tolerances, and repair or refurbishment requirements.
  • Experience in a large mechanical repair, industrial manufacturing, machining, fabrication, or comparable production environment.
  • Ability to develop estimates, work scopes, routings, and execution plans while balancing technical requirements, cost, schedule, and customer expectations.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications, with the ability to learn and work effectively in L&H operating systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and customer service judgment across both external and internal customers.
  • Strong organization and follow-through with the ability to manage multiple active jobs, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-changing environment.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, problem-solving, ownership, and a consistently positive, team-oriented mindset.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related technical field; equivalent technical education and directly relevant heavy-industrial, mining, mineral processing, hydro, or other severe-duty industrial experience may be considered.
  • Experience quoting engineered-to-order or repair work and coordinating jobs through machining, welding/fabrication, mechanical assembly, purchasing, and shipping/receiving.
  • Experience with customer compliance requirements, business assessments, Master Service Agreements, and detailed scopes covering safety, quality, environmental, and production expectations.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills.
Core Competencies
  • Technical curiosity and sound mechanical judgment
  • Customer focus and professional responsiveness
  • Planning, prioritization, and attention to detail
  • Cross-functional teamwork and influence without direct authority
  • Adaptability and composure when scope, schedule, or priorities change
  • Positive, solutions-oriented mindset with strong personal accountability
