Production Foreman

Job Description | Plant Administration Department | Humboldt, Kansas

Position Summary

Responsible for the supervision of employees engaged in the operation of the raw mills, kiln operation, clinker grinding finish mills, blending, material handling and storage of cement. Also, responsible for supervising the continuous operation departments of the plant and quarry during the night shift, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended to describe the general nature of the work performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, or tasks that may be assigned.

• Exchanges information with regular department foremen daily relative to work to be done, operational problems, employee assignments, etc., occurring during the shift.

• Directs and supervises the work of all employees performing production and maintenance duties throughout the cement plant and quarry during the night, weekend, and relief shifts.

• Cooperates with the laboratory in producing a quality product.

• Makes regular check of departments supervised to ascertain proper operation, water and air leaks, fire protection, power utilizations, etc.

• Assists in coordination of on-going maintenance, repair, kiln lining, etc., projects carried into night, weekend, or relief shifts.

• Plans and schedules the work of the employees assigned in the raw and finish grinding systems and in the raw material handling system.

• Observes cement pumping and flow to ascertain that cement is being directed into proper storage silos.

• Conducts inspections of machinery and equipment in all milling area noting excessive wear and determining replacement needs; and issues work repair orders.

• Receives information from laboratory personnel regarding adjustments to feed or speed of finish mills to achieve fineness and correct amount of additives for cement types; reports daily production figures to laboratory personnel.

• Confers with Production Manager to determine production needs and to discuss any problems; assist in preparing production schedules.

• Maintains adequate stockpile of additives and other materials used in finish grinding.

• Receives incoming calls from absent employees and calls in replacements.

• Places requisitions for materials and parts from storeroom and vendors.

• Advises perspective employees of job duties and responsibilities during bidding procedures; observe and evaluate performance; arrange for vacations and other time off; review daily timecards for employee attendance; check for work order and equipment numbers and approve hours worked, including overtime; and inform employees of policies and practices.

• Conduct safety inspections of the department and maintain good housekeeping.

• Conduct safety meetings of departmental employees.

• Participate in developing the annual department budget.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• H.S. education or equivalent.

• Must have good knowledge of operating machinery.

• Must have a valid driver’s license.

• Proficient in Computer Skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to bend or stoop, squat or crouch, reach, kneel, push, pull, and lift to perform duties.

• Lifting of supplies and materials from time to time.

• Some travel to various locations, meetings or seminars along with other travel may be required.

Work Environment

A percentage of time will be spent indoors and outdoors. This position works in an industrial cement manufacturing environment. The employee may be exposed to plant equipment, moving machinery, dust, noise, heights, confined spaces, electrical systems, and other conditions typical of cement manufacturing operations. Appropriate safety procedures and personal protective equipment are required. Some travel to various locations, meetings or seminars along with other travel may be required.
