What is a Quarkus Developer?

A Quarkus Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building Java applications using the Quarkus framework. Quarkus is a Kubernetes-native Java framework optimized for GraalVM and HotSpot, known for its fast startup times and low memory usage. Quarkus Developers typically work on developing, deploying, and maintaining microservices and cloud-native applications, leveraging Quarkus' capabilities to optimize performance and scalability. Their role may also involve integrating various libraries, ensuring best practices, and collaborating with DevOps teams for containerization and deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quarkus Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quarkus Developer, you need strong proficiency in Java, familiarity with microservices architecture, and experience with cloud-native development, often supported by a computer science degree or similar background. Expertise with Quarkus itself, RESTful APIs, containerization tools like Docker, and CI/CD platforms is typically required, and certifications in Java or cloud technologies can be beneficial. Problem-solving ability, adaptability, and collaboration are crucial soft skills for excelling in team environments and rapidly evolving projects. These skills and qualities are essential for building efficient, scalable, and maintainable applications that meet modern enterprise needs.

What is the difference between Quarkus Developer vs Spring Boot Developer?

AspectQuarkus DeveloperSpring Boot Developer

Industry UsageStartups, cloud providers, modern Java projectsEnterprises, large-scale web apps, legacy system integration

Both Quarkus and Spring Boot developers typically have Java certifications and work in cloud or enterprise environments. Quarkus developers focus on building lightweight, container-friendly microservices optimized for cloud-native deployment, while Spring Boot developers often work on scalable web applications and enterprise solutions. The choice depends on project requirements and infrastructure preferences.

What are some common challenges Quarkus Developers face when integrating legacy Java applications into a Quarkus-based microservices architecture?

Quarkus Developers often encounter challenges such as migrating existing Java EE or Spring-based applications to leverage Quarkus' fast startup times and low memory footprint. Compatibility issues with certain libraries, adapting to Quarkus' build-time optimizations, and reconfiguring dependency injection can require careful planning and testing. Collaboration with DevOps teams is also crucial, as containerization and deployment workflows may change. Addressing these challenges helps ensure smoother transitions and maximizes the benefits of a modern microservices approach.

Job description

Job Description

The Role:

As a senior engineer, you will help design, build, and safeguard the quality of applications across the GM's Product Validation, Safety & Quality IT (PVSQ) organization, which spans regulatory compliance, safety systems, and quality engineering used across vehicle programs. Depending on your strengths, you may lean toward building end-to-end features across the stack (Quarkus or Spring Boot services, a Next.js/React portal, a relational database, and a Databricks lakehouse) or toward the test automation and quality engineering that keep those systems reliable.

You will have the opportunity to work hands-on writing software or solutions, based on detailed requirements and system specifications. Using sound, repeatable, industry standard methodologies, you will support the PVSQ organization responsible for developing Nextgen applications. As part of development activities, we will update existing software and/or develop new software solutions to target specific business obstacles. A repeatable, systematic, and quantifiable approach to the development process will also be applied along with the use of appropriate methodologies.

As a coach/mentor, you will provide feedback on the software being developed to software developers. Ensure code alignment with design patterns/frameworks by working closely with architects and data scientists.

What You'll Do:

  • Design and maintain back-end microservices inJava (Quarkusor Spring Boot), exposing bothREST and GraphQLAPIs with well-defined, versioned contracts and shared DTOs.

  • Build responsive front-end features in theNext.js / Reactportal usingTypeScriptandApollofor GraphQL data access.

  • Develop and supportDatabricksdata workflows (Unity Catalog, Delta tables, and the medallion pattern) that feed regulatory reporting and dashboards.

  • Evolve the transactional relational schema (PostgreSQL or Oracle) safely, writing versionedLiquibasechangesets that ship through the same pipeline as application code.

  • Produce clean, well-documented, testable code that aligns with the team's design patterns, frameworks, and standards.

  • Conduct thorough code reviews and writeunit, integration, and end-to-end tests(TestNG, Selenium, cross-browser via BrowserStack) that gate every release.

  • Diagnose and resolve issues across services, the portal, and data pipelines, using observability tooling (Datadog / App Insights).

  • Work within the CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions, security scanning, promotion dev test prod) and help keepmainreleasable at all times.

  • Translate business and regulatory requirements into executable development work: break them down, shape the technical approach, and drive it through to delivery in partnership with stakeholders and BAs.

  • Lead and drive software design for scalability and reusability across the full stack, from the UI down to the database structure.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 7+ years building and shipping production software, with strong recent depth inJava / JVM(Quarkus or Spring Boot).

  • Demonstratedfull-stackcapability: comfortable owning a feature from aNext.js / React / TypeScriptfront end through a Java service to the data layer, not backend-only.

  • Proven ability to take a business requirement all the way to running software: owning the end-to-end design (UI through service to database structure) with scalability and reusability in mind, rather than only implementing predefined tickets.

  • Hands-on experience designing and operatingRESTful and GraphQL APIs, including contract/versioning discipline and API security best practices.

  • Solid experience with arelational database (PostgreSQLor Oracle)behind transactional services, using an ORM (Hibernate / JPA, ideally QuarkusPanache), and managing schema changes with a migration tool (Liquibase).

  • Working knowledge ofdata-lakehouse platformsfor the analytical/reporting side (Databricks / Delta / Unity Catalogstrongly preferred); ability to reason about data models, lineage, and access control.

  • Experience deploying and running services onAzure: containers (Docker),Kubernetes (AKS), and container registries.

  • Fluency withGit and GitHub-based CI/CD(GitHub Actions or equivalent): automated build, test, security scanning, and promotion pipelines.

  • Working knowledge ofInfrastructure as Code (Terraform)for provisioning and configuration.

  • Comfort defining and upholding technical/operational metadata standards, data-movement patterns, and ETL/ELT best practices.

  • Comprehensive understanding of the SDLC and experience inAgile / Scrumenvironments.

People Skills

  • Proven ability to lead development initiatives and drive design decisions, planning and executing deliverables within a collaborative team.

  • Independent, self-driven, and quick to learn, with strong, thorough problem-solving.

  • Highly organized and effective at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication; able to translate regulatory and stakeholder requirements into actionable technical work and engage clearly with diverse audiences.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge

  • Experience withApache Sparkand large-scale data processing on Databricks (DBX job orchestration).

  • Familiarity withchange-data-capturepatterns and tooling (e.g., HVR) feeding a medallion lakehouse.

  • Experience withGHAS(code/secret/dependency scanning),Wiz(container scanning), Dependabot, and secure-SDLC practices.

  • Experience withfeature-flagged, trunk-based deliveryand one-button/continuous release models.

  • Familiarity withAI-assisted developmentworkflows (e.g., Copilot, Cursor) and grounding agents with repo context (AGENTS.md/ cross-service dependency maps).

  • Background inregulated or compliance-driven domainswhere auditability and reporting deadlines are first-class concerns.

  • Experience with observability platforms (Datadog, Azure Application Insights).

This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
