What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Quantum Research, and why are they important?

To thrive in Quantum Research, you need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and quantum mechanics, often supported by a Ph.D. or advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), high-performance computing systems, and experience with laboratory or simulation tools are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are essential for advancing scientific understanding, driving innovation, and effectively contributing to complex, multidisciplinary research projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Quantum Research, and how can they be addressed?

Quantum Research professionals often encounter challenges such as rapidly evolving technology, complex problem-solving, and the need for continuous learning. Staying current with the latest scientific literature and collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams—such as physicists, computer scientists, and engineers—can help address these challenges. Additionally, strong communication skills are essential for explaining advanced concepts to stakeholders and for successful teamwork. Many organizations also support ongoing education and training to help researchers remain at the forefront of this dynamic field.

What is quantum research?

Quantum research is the scientific study of the principles and applications of quantum mechanics, the branch of physics that describes the behavior of matter and energy at the smallest scales. Researchers in this field investigate phenomena such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum tunneling, which have no classical analogs. Quantum research is foundational for developing new technologies like quantum computers, quantum cryptography, and ultra-sensitive sensors. This interdisciplinary field often involves physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering.

What is the difference between Quantum Research vs Quantum Engineering?

AspectQuantum ResearchQuantum Engineering
Required CredentialsMaster's or PhD in Physics, Quantum Mechanics, or related fieldsMaster's or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, R&D departmentsDevelopment labs, technology companies, product-focused environments
Employer & Industry UsageAcademic institutions, government labs, research-focused companiesTech companies, startups, industry R&D divisions
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding research roles, academic careers, foundational workApplication development, product design, practical implementation

Quantum Research primarily involves exploring theoretical and experimental aspects of quantum phenomena, often within academic or government research settings. Quantum Engineering focuses on applying quantum principles to develop practical technologies like quantum computers and sensors. While both roles require advanced degrees in related fields, their work environments and objectives differ—research vs application.

Job description

Job Description
Florida State University (FSU) is embarking on an ambitious faculty hiring initiative in Quantum Science and Engineering (QSE), recognizing the potential of QSE to revolutionize such sectors as computation, material science, cryptography, and artificial intelligence. The College of Arts and Sciences at FSU and the joint College of Engineering at Florida A&M University (FAMU) and FSU are inviting applications for multiple, open-rank, tenure-track or tenured positions in QSE. Successful applicants will be appointed to a mutually agreed upon department, with joint appointments between departments and colleges being possible. More details on the hiring process can be found at http://quantum.fsu.edu/people/job-openings.
Background. FSU has made bold recent investments in QSE, creating an interdisciplinary FSU Quantum Initiative (https://quantum.fsu.edu). The mission of FSU Quantum is to accelerate the discovery of novel quantum phenomena that can impact the design of engineered systems for quantum information processing, communication, sensing, and algorithms, as well as devices and hardware that rely on quantum protocols. In alignment with the FSU Quantum mission, we seek to fill multiple tenure-track or tenured positions in two broadly defined QSE areas:
QUANTUM DEVICES: Seeking individuals specializing in quantum devices, hardware, and measurements. Areas of interest encompass quantum materials and devices, quantum optics, advanced spectroscopy, microscopy, and other quantum device fabrication and characterization techniques.
QUANTUM THEORY: Seeking individuals in the domains of quantum information, theory, and computation. Those keen on utilizing and developing cutting-edge theoretical, computational, and architectural techniques relevant to QSE are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities. Successful applicants will be expected to develop and nurture research programs that will be internationally recognized, to attract and and sustain external funding, to incorporate interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers across campus, and to demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity and excellence in education. Expectations will also include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers, and engaging in college and professional service.
Qualifications. Minimum qualifications include possessing a Ph.D. or foreign degree equivalent in an appropriate discipline, such as Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics, or Physics, or another field appropriate to the study of quantum science. Additional necessary qualities include evidence of the promise of academic and research excellence that will lead to future distinction. Applicants for tenure-track Assistant Professor positions must exhibit strong potential in research and a high level of dedication to teaching. Applicants for senior tenured positions must showcase a stellar record of scholarship and education.
HOW TO APPLY. Qualified candidates can apply at https://hr.fsu.edu/facultyjobs by choosing "Search Careers", then "View All Jobs", and applying for the opportunity under job ID 56090. (If you are a current FSU employee, apply via myFSU > Self Service.) All applicants are required to complete the online application and upload:
  • A cover letter
  • A full curriculum vitae
  • A 2-page research statement
  • A 1-page teaching statement
  • In addition, applicants for tenure-track Assistant Professor positions should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent by email to quantum-hires@fsu.edu to complete the application.

Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2023 and continue until the available positions have been filled.
Considerations. These are Faculty positions. Upon appointment to the position, successful applicants will be required to complete a criminal history background check. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with FSU Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
