What is a Quantum Computing job?

A Quantum Computing job involves researching, developing, and applying quantum mechanics principles to create advanced computing systems. Professionals in this field work on algorithms, hardware, and software that leverage quantum bits (qubits) to solve complex problems faster than classical computers. Roles include quantum software engineer, quantum physicist, and research scientist, often requiring expertise in physics, mathematics, and computer science. These jobs are typically found in academia, tech companies, and government research labs focused on advancing quantum technology.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in quantum computing?

Professionals in quantum computing spend their days developing and testing quantum algorithms, collaborating with physicists and engineers on hardware advancements, and running experiments on quantum simulators or actual devices. They often work in interdisciplinary teams and engage in regular code reviews, technical discussions, and research collaborations. Keeping up with the latest scientific literature and participating in internal or external seminars is also common. This dynamic workflow ensures that team members stay informed about cutting-edge developments and continuously contribute to innovative projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Quantum Computing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in quantum computing, you typically need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by a graduate degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), quantum hardware platforms, and experience with simulation tools are frequently required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential for developing and implementing quantum algorithms, collaborating on interdisciplinary teams, and advancing this rapidly evolving field.

Our current needs

We are actively seeking a talented individual to contribute to devising pathways to bridge the gap between the requirements for large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing and our current experimental implementation of quantum error correction based on bosonic codes. To achieve this ambitious goal, we are in search of an innovative candidate who will join our theory and simulation team.

Your responsibilities within this role include:

  • Design of bosonic error-correction and computation schemes: Your primary task will involve exploiting all the rich physics of bosonic qubits to design better error-correcting protocols to scale more efficiently toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. This includes designing new error-correcting codes as well as improving the physical implementation of existing codes. You will also investigate ways to improve computation schemes using bosonic qubits.
  • Numerical simulation of large-scale quantum circuits: Simulating realistic noise models and control strategies in large-scale quantum circuits is a challenging task. This will necessitate innovative problem-solving to scale our simulation abilities.
  • Software Development: You will contribute to the development of essential code to bolster our research and development tools.
  • Collaboration: In our collaborative work environment, you will have the opportunity to engage in mission-critical projects that involve collaborations across all teams in Nord Quantique. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are required, as you will be an integral part of a team-driven approach to problem-solving.

Sought expertise:

  • Academic and/or industry research experience in quantum computing or adjacent fields,
  • Experience in coding and numerical research,
  • Strong organizational skills are essential, as you will likely work on complex projects with multiple components,
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred expertise:

  • Experience in one or more of the following fields is an asset: practical near-term implementations of quantum error correction, quantum error correction and fault tolerant quantum computation, bosonic quantum error correcting codes, circuit quantum electrodynamics, near-term and fault-tolerant quantum algorithms, quantum control.
  • Experience with software development and software best practices is an advantage.
  • Experience in high-performance computation is beneficial.
  • Experience working with experimental teams is an asset.

Sought profile

  • Adaptability: The candidate should be able to adapt to rapidly changing environments, as the goals and priorities in the context of a deep tech startup are dynamic and evolving.
  • Team-Oriented Mindset: Collaboration is key in scientific and quantum computing research, so a team-oriented mindset is highly valued.
  • Thorough and Systematic: Attention to detail, thoroughness, and a systematic approach to problem-solving are crucial in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the results and conclusions.
  • Prioritization and Coordination: The ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate actions is essential, especially when working on complex projects with multiple stakeholders.
