What is a Quantum Computing job?

A Quantum Computing job involves researching, developing, and applying quantum mechanics principles to create advanced computing systems. Professionals in this field work on algorithms, hardware, and software that leverage quantum bits (qubits) to solve complex problems faster than classical computers. Roles include quantum software engineer, quantum physicist, and research scientist, often requiring expertise in physics, mathematics, and computer science. These jobs are typically found in academia, tech companies, and government research labs focused on advancing quantum technology.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in quantum computing?

Professionals in quantum computing spend their days developing and testing quantum algorithms, collaborating with physicists and engineers on hardware advancements, and running experiments on quantum simulators or actual devices. They often work in interdisciplinary teams and engage in regular code reviews, technical discussions, and research collaborations. Keeping up with the latest scientific literature and participating in internal or external seminars is also common. This dynamic workflow ensures that team members stay informed about cutting-edge developments and continuously contribute to innovative projects.

What is the salary of a quantum engineer?

The salary of a quantum engineer typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in quantum algorithms or hardware may earn higher compensation. Entry-level positions generally start around $70,000 to $90,000.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Quantum Computing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in quantum computing, you typically need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by a graduate degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), quantum hardware platforms, and experience with simulation tools are frequently required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential for developing and implementing quantum algorithms, collaborating on interdisciplinary teams, and advancing this rapidly evolving field.

Is quantum computing as big as AI?

Quantum computing and AI are both rapidly advancing fields, but AI currently has a broader practical impact and market size. Quantum computing is still in early development stages, primarily used in research and specialized applications, requiring skills in quantum algorithms and programming languages like Qiskit or Cirq. Job opportunities for quantum computing roles are growing but are more niche compared to AI positions.

What careers are there in quantum computing?

Careers in quantum computing include roles such as quantum software engineers, quantum hardware engineers, research scientists, and quantum algorithm developers. These positions typically require knowledge of quantum mechanics, programming skills in languages like Python or Qiskit, and often a background in physics, computer science, or engineering. Opportunities exist in academia, industry, and government labs focused on developing quantum technologies and applications.

Is quantum computing a good career?

Quantum computing is a rapidly growing field with increasing demand for specialists in areas such as quantum algorithms, hardware development, and cryptography. Careers in this area typically require strong backgrounds in physics, computer science, or engineering, along with skills in programming languages like Python and familiarity with quantum programming frameworks. The field offers opportunities in research, academia, and industry, often involving advanced degrees and continuous learning to stay current with technological advancements.

Our current needs

As part of the creation of the Engineering Department, Nord Quantique is building a new Quantum System Validation team responsible for validating that logical quantum performance is preserved as systems scale toward deployment-ready quantum computing platforms.

We are seeking a highly motivated experimental physicist or engineer with experience in quantum systems, cryogenic experiments, and large-scale validation environments. Experience with superconducting quantum systems is an asset.

The mission of this role is to execute and develop validation methodologies that characterize system-level performance, operational robustness, and long-term reliability of integrated quantum computing systems under realistic scaling constraints.

More specifically, this individual will contribute to long-duration validation campaigns, characterize scaling-induced variability and emergent error sources, support system bring-up activities, and help establish the reliability foundations required for future utility-scale and deployment-ready quantum computing systems.

Keys responsibilities:

  • Define and execute system-level experimental validation campaigns
  • Characterize logical and physical performance under scaling-induced variability and emergent error sources
  • Perform long-duration stability and drift measurements
  • Support integrated system bring-up and operational robustness testing
  • Validate calibration workflows, boot-up sequencing, and hardware–software orchestration
  • Contribute to failure analysis, root-cause investigations, and reliability qualification activities
  • Develop automated validation and characterization workflows
  • Analyze experimental data and communicate findings to cross-functional engineering and research teams
  • Support development of deployment-readiness criteria, acceptance metrics, and performance-gating methodologies

Education and experience requirements:

  • PhD in electrical engineering, experimental physics, quantum engineering, systems engineering, or a related field
  • Relevant experience in quantum technologies, superconducting quantum hardware, or complex cryogenic experimental systems
  • Experience executing experimental campaigns in multidisciplinary environments

Sought expertise and knowledge:

  • Circuit QED and superconducting quantum systems
  • Cryogenic experimental systems
  • RF, microwave, and pulsed measurements of superconducting quantum systems
  • Experimental automation and calibration workflows
  • Data analysis and statistical interpretation
  • System-level validation and performance characterization
  • Reliability engineering or long-duration stability testing, an asset
  • Python programming and version control best practices, an asset
  • Advanced level in English, to communicate with international team members
  • Intermediate knowledge of French, an asset
