As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for quantum computer hardware in the United States is $21.86, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $21.88 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the typical collaboration dynamics between quantum computer hardware engineers and other teams?

Quantum computer hardware engineers frequently collaborate with physicists, software developers, and research scientists to design, test, and refine quantum devices. You'll often work closely with experimental teams to troubleshoot hardware issues and with software teams to ensure compatibility between quantum hardware and control systems. This multidisciplinary environment encourages constant knowledge exchange and fosters innovation, making communication and teamwork essential skills for success in this role.

What is quantum computer hardware?

Quantum computer hardware refers to the physical components and systems used to build quantum computers, which operate using the principles of quantum mechanics. Unlike classical computers that use bits, quantum computers use quantum bits or 'qubits' that can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This hardware includes qubit processors, cryogenic systems to maintain low temperatures, control electronics, and specialized materials for stability and coherence. Advances in quantum hardware are essential for improving the power and reliability of quantum computers. The field is highly interdisciplinary, involving physics, engineering, and computer science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Quantum Computer Hardware roles, and why are they important?

To excel in Quantum Computer Hardware, a deep understanding of quantum mechanics, electrical engineering, and solid-state physics is essential, often supported by an advanced degree in physics, engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with specialized laboratory equipment, cryogenic systems, and quantum hardware simulation tools, as well as experience with programming languages like Python, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for advancing quantum hardware development and ensuring reliable operation in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
