Description Title: Graduate Research Assistant Position Number: 0000GA11 Hiring Unit: School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene, Hawaii State Center for Nursing Location: Manoa Campus / Honolulu Date Posted: September 2, 2026 Closing Date: September 14, 2026 Salary Information: Step 17: $2,627 per month/ $31,524 annually Monthly Appointment Type: 11-Month Part Time/ Full Time: Part Time Full Time Equivalency: 50% Temporary/ Permanent: Temporary Other Conditions: The Hawai'i State Center for Nursing invites students for Master's Degrees or PhDs in Nursing, Communicology, Psychology, Sociology, or other social science departments to apply for a temporary, 50% effort, 11-month Graduate Assistant position beginning in September 2026. Continuation is contingent upon program needs, satisfactory work performance, academic progress, and availability of funds. Position benefits include tuition waiver and eligibility for health benefits, such as medical, drug, dental, and vision, with employee contribution.
The position is open to students in the Nursing PhD Program or Master's or PhD programs in Communicology, Psychology, Sociology or other social science departments who are interested in nursing and healthcare workforce research. The student will assist the Researcher at the Hawaii State Center for Nursing with revising data collection instruments, monitoring the fielding of surveys, analyzing survey data, updating and creating interactive dashboards, writing workforce reports (gray literature), conducting literature reviews, and developing manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals. Duties and Responsibilities Works closely with the Associate Director/Researcher to support the completion of essential workforce data collection, reporting, and consolidation.
Assists with the compilation or analysis of historical workforce data from the Center for Nursing's own reports and data archives. Assists with the revision, programming, and testing of online data collection tools. Analyzes survey data with guidance and supervision of the Researcher and writes summaries of data for inclusion in workforce reports, information briefs, infographics, and dashboards.
Reviews and summarizes literature related to contemporary nursing workforce issues and supports the drafting of reviews of relevant literature for publishable manuscripts. Attends online meetings, sharing sessions, and webinars hosted by national organizations working on nursing and health workforce development. Attends Center for Nursing staff meetings as requested.
Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director/Researcher or the Director. Minimum Qualifications Classified degree-seeking graduate student in a PhD in Nursing program or Master's or PhD student in Communicology, Psychology, Sociology, or other social science program, enrolled full time and in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or above) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving, communication, and adaptability skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom and ability to manage multiple projects are essential.
Desirable Qualifications Interest in survey methods and quantitative data analysis. Interest in nursing or other healthcare workforce research and development. Interest in communicating data effectively to tell compelling stories and draw attention to critical workforce development issues.
Familiarity with SPSS, SAS, or R statistical packages. Proficiency in making graphs/charts in Excel. Familiarity with Zotero or similar bibliographic management software.
Willingness to learn Tableau Public. Working knowledge of the publication guidelines of the American Psychological Association. Familiarity with ethical guidelines for research with human subjects.
