As of Jun 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for quality tech in the United States is $21.22, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.31 and $23.32 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Quality Techs?

Quality Techs, also known as Quality Technicians, are professionals who monitor and inspect products or processes to ensure they meet established quality standards. They use various testing equipment and measurement tools to check for defects, document findings, and report issues to supervisors. Quality Techs work closely with production teams to identify problems, implement corrective actions, and help maintain compliance with industry regulations. Their role is crucial in ensuring final products are safe, reliable, and meet customer expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quality Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Tech, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in quality assurance or manufacturing, often supported by a relevant associate degree or certification. Familiarity with inspection tools, measurement devices, statistical process control (SPC) software, and ISO quality standards is typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are essential soft skills for identifying issues and collaborating with production teams. These skills ensure products meet quality specifications, reduce defects, and support continuous improvement in manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Quality Tech vs Quality Inspector?

AspectQuality TechQuality Inspector
CertificationsOften requires certifications like ASQ CQE or CQTMay also hold similar certifications, but less frequently
Work EnvironmentHands-on testing, data collection, and process monitoring in manufacturing or production settingsInspection of products or components, often in quality control labs or production lines
Job FocusImplementing quality processes, performing tests, and supporting quality improvementsExamining products for defects, ensuring compliance with standards
Industry UsageCommonly used in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive industriesWidely used across manufacturing, electronics, and consumer goods sectors

While both roles focus on quality assurance, a Quality Tech typically performs testing and process support, whereas a Quality Inspector primarily conducts product inspections. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are some common challenges Quality Techs face when working with cross-functional teams?

Quality Techs often collaborate with production, engineering, and supply chain teams to ensure products meet quality standards. A common challenge is effectively communicating quality issues or test results to team members who may have different technical backgrounds or priorities. Balancing the need for thorough inspections with production deadlines can also create pressure. Developing strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills helps Quality Techs bridge gaps and foster a culture of quality across the organization.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A Quality Tech can potentially earn $10,000 a month through experience, certifications, and specialized skills in quality assurance, testing, or inspection roles. High-paying positions often require technical knowledge, attention to detail, and sometimes industry-specific certifications but may not require a formal degree. Success depends on experience, location, and the industry sector.

Job Summary

The Quality Tech Engineer serves as the critical bridge between R&D innovation and Manufacturing execution. Based at the Piscataway Technology Center, this role acts as the primary execution lead for the Technology Transfer process, ensuring new formulas and products are successfully scaled from the lab to manufacturing. Distinct from routine daily plant quality operations, this role is laser focused on supporting New Product Innovation across our external and internal network. The Engineer will travel to execute plant trials, help mitigate scale up risks, drive post launch reviews, and provide ongoing technical expertise to external/internal  partners.

Core Responsibilities
  • Manage and execute all stages of the electronic Technology Transfer process for  Manufacturing, leveraging strategic support and guidance from the Sr. Tech Quality Manager and Quality Tech Director.

  • Act as the primary corporate resource bridging R&D and manufacturing capabilities. Relay critical information between manufacturing partners and R&D innovation needs, leading technical discussions with engineers and key stakeholders at the plant.

  • Partner with site teams prior to trials to ensure operational readiness, verify new raw material and packaging availability, and support technical risk assessments for new product innovation.

  • Travel to manufacturing sites (Internal and/or External) to serve as the physical execution lead for plant trials and EMOs, monitoring Critical Process Parameters directly on the floor and executing formal EMO reports.

  • Leverage deep technical knowledge of formulations and scale up processes to provide ongoing support to Plant Quality teams and Operations. Act as the subject matter expert for troubleshooting complex issues on both new innovations and existing manufactured products.

  • Lead the creation of post launch reports, support broader On-Shelf Quality (OSQ) initiatives, and partner with Quality Teams to investigate and resolve complex, formula driven quality deviations across the CMO portfolio.

  • Facilitate ongoing synchronization meetings connecting R&D, Quality, and Site Operations to ensure seamless communication and remove roadblocks during commercialization.

  • Actively adopt and apply emerging AI and digital tools to support continuous improvement, optimize external plant trials, and enhance the overall efficiency of product commercialization.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial), Chemistry, or a closely related technical/scientific field.

  • 5+ years of working experience in Quality, Manufacturing, R&D, or Process Engineering within the consumer goods (FMCG), pharmaceutical, or food/beverage industries.

  • Proven, hands on experience participating in or leading plant trials, new product scale ups, or technology transfers from a laboratory environment to a manufacturing floor.

  • Strong analytical and root cause analysis skills with a demonstrated ability to investigate and resolve complex manufacturing or formula driven deviations.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to translate complex R&D requirements into practical manufacturing steps, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams (Operations, R&D, Quality).

  • Willingness and ability to travel to various Manufacturing sites as required to support on site trials, scale ups, and troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of cGMPs and FDA regulatory requirements.

  • Experience working directly with or within Manufacturing facilities.

  • Familiarity with the technology transfer process.

  • Background in manufacturing processing and scale up operations.

  • Experience utilizing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software and/or SAP.
