Job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(Including the following, however, additional duties may apply as required)
  • Follows and complies with safety policies and procedures
  • Performs complete layout inspection by measuring dimensions, such as length, height, and distance between reference points, using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicator, and CMM, to ensure product meets specifications
  • Locate reference point(s) on part and measure dimension such as angle, arc, and radii, using combinations of aids, such as surface plate parallel bars, angle plates, gauge blocks, plug pins, V blocks, sine bars, and precision measuring instruments such as height gage
  • Perform structural steel inspections, weld inspections, special inspection, and other related inspections, and generate inspection reports as required
  • Perform all NDE inspections that the technician is qualified for per SNT-TC-1A standard. This may include utilizing Liquid Penetrant Testing, Magnetic Particle Inspections, Ultrasonic Testing and Visual Inspections
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications / read technical construction drawings to determine that any examinations performed meet the established customer and code requirements
  • Follows established testing procedure accurately and ensures that all testing is performed per the procedure, all test equipment is operating within established parameters and that the examination variables and results are clearly documented
  • Visually compares work pieces against one another to assess/detect manufacturing variations in processes
  • Assists and/or trains operators on welding visual acceptability, measurement and process procedures as required
  • Reports quality problems or findings to Quality Control Manager and follows up to ensure that corrective action has/will take place
  • Maintains record of inspections and prepares list of defects, interacts with other departments to ensure compliance with specification and to facilitate the acceptance of parts
  • Document ALL rejected parts using correct documentation
  • Investigate practices and procedures and perform internal quality system audit to determine quality standards and whether these standards are being met. Implement corrective action as required
  • Work with vendors to correct defect issues
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area including equipment and performs all assignments in a safe manner and in accordance with established procedures
  • Rotating Saturdays required (Approx. 4 hours)

Desired Skills
  • Ability to interpret blueprints.
  • Basic Math & Geometry/Trigonometry.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Flexibility based on plant production schedules.
  • A minimum of one-year previous experience using computer and measuring instruments.
  • CMM operation and programming a plus.
  • Level II qualification in at least three Nondestructive testing methods (PT,MT,VT,UT)
  • Ability to document required training and discipline hours for each certification held.

Education and Experience
  • Technical Degree preferred but will consider work experience of lieu of degree
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Visual acuity to read directions and prints to inspect parts closely to ensure that they meet standards
  • Excellent Communication Skills - both written and verbal
  • Intermediate level or higher computer skills
  • Valid Driver's License - you will have to travel to vendor locations on some occasions

Physical Demands
Ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane, forklift or stand-up may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. when required. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
