What is a quality engineer?

A quality engineer ensures that the products manufactured by a company are meeting company and government quality control standards. As a quality engineer, your responsibilities include assessing and developing quality assurance protocols, examining products for compliance, and training teams to follow your policies. You also record data regarding production to track quality and produce the documentation need to communicate concerns throughout the company. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) regulates the profession and offers a path to become a certified quality engineer (CQE).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Engineer, you need a solid grounding in engineering principles, quality assurance methodologies, and a relevant degree such as in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, ISO standards, statistical process control (SPC), and quality management systems (QMS) is typically required, and certifications like CQE (Certified Quality Engineer) are highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify issues, collaborate with teams, and drive continuous improvement. These skills ensure that products and processes consistently meet standards, minimize defects, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

How does a quality engineer typically collaborate with other departments to ensure product quality?

Quality Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, design, and supply chain to uphold product standards. They often participate in team meetings, review process documentation, and coordinate root cause analyses with engineers and operators. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are key, as they must ensure that quality requirements are clearly understood and implemented throughout each stage of production. This collaborative approach not only helps resolve issues quickly but also fosters a culture of continuous improvement across the organization.

What is the difference between Quality Engineer vs Quality Technician?

Required SkillsAnalytical skills, problem-solving, knowledge of quality standardsAttention to detail, testing procedures, data collection
CertificationsASQ CQE, Six SigmaASQ CQPA, basic quality certifications

How much does a quality engineer earn?

The average salary for a quality engineer varies by location and experience but typically ranges from $60,000 to $90,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with certifications like Six Sigma or ISO may earn higher salaries. Salaries can also be influenced by industry, company size, and specific skills such as proficiency with quality management tools.

What degree do you need for a quality engineer?

A quality engineer typically needs at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field. Relevant skills include knowledge of quality management systems and tools like Six Sigma or ISO standards, and some roles may prefer or require professional certifications such as ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE).

Job description

Who We Are
Provision IAM is a custom digital solutions agency specializing in financial and regulatory technology. For more than 30 years, we've helped organizations optimize digital operations and build secure, scalable identity and access management solutions for financial institutions and other regulated industries.
We are a distributed U.S.-based team of thoughtful technologists and problem-solvers who value ownership, continuous learning, attention to detail, and meaningful impact. Our environment supports autonomy, professional growth, and collaboration across engineering, operations, quality assurance, and client teams.
If you're looking for a role where your quality assurance expertise, technical judgment, and commitment to excellent user experiences help improve digital operations for real clients, you'll find purpose and visibility here.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Senior Web Quality Assurance Engineer to lead quality assurance testing for web-based products, digital platforms, and client-facing technology solutions. This role requires someone who can work independently, understand the broader purpose of QA within a technical environment, and take ownership of testing quality without needing day-to-day technical guidance.
In this role, you will own the development and execution of comprehensive test plans that support the full user experience. You will work closely with managers, developers, and client-facing team members to identify, document, prioritize, and communicate layout, functional, content, legal, analytics, security-oriented, and compliance-related issues with clarity and confidence.
This is a hands-on senior QA role that requires strong organization, clear documentation, professional communication, and sound judgment. You will communicate directly with clients when needed to help triage issues, clarify concerns, support resolution, and ensure that quality expectations are understood and met.
This role is well-suited for someone who enjoys detailed testing, understands web technologies, can evaluate issues beyond surface-level defects, and is comfortable being the primary QA resource responsible for maintaining high standards across multiple projects.
This is a full-time, fully remote position open to applicants across the continental United States who are authorized to work in the U.S.
Salary Range: $65,000 - $80,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary: $65,000 - $80,000
  • Company-paid health insurance, including employee and family coverage
  • Generous paid time off
  • SIMPLE IRA retirement plan, including IRS-compliant eligibility and company participation
  • Fully remote work environment
  • Meaningful work supporting financial institutions and regulated businesses

  • Develop, execute, and maintain comprehensive test plans
  • Review requirements, acceptance criteria, workflows, and expected functionality to ensure appropriate test coverage
  • Perform browser, layout, functional, and responsive testing across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices
  • Identify, document, prioritize, and communicate defects, inconsistencies, risks, and user experience issues
  • Test websites and applications against established requirements, acceptance criteria, client expectations, and quality standards
  • Review content, links, forms, analytics tags and triggers, and related functionality for accuracy and consistency
  • Identify and report content, legal, analytics, security-oriented, and compliance-related inconsistencies within the scope of the QA process
  • Communicate directly with clients and internal team members to help triage, clarify, and resolve reported issues
  • Provide clear QA guidance and recommendations when issues require judgment, prioritization, or additional investigation
  • Follow and improve existing QA processes, documentation standards, and testing procedures
  • Manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, including work with tight deadlines
  • Assist with client training, support documentation, or process documentation when needed
