POSITION SUMMARY
Position: Quality Engineer
Reports to: Quality Manager
Location: Greenville, SC
The Quality Engineer will work directly with operators, engineers, and leadership to identify issues, develop solutions, and drive continuous improvement in a fast-paced production environment. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining quality assurance and control processes to ensure products meet or exceed internal requirements and industry standards.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
  • Maintain a strong presence on the manufacturing floor, partnering with production teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve quality issues in real time.
  • Plan and oversee inspection and testing of raw materials, in-process components, and finished goods to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve quality systems, including inspection plans, control plans, and procedures.
  • Lead root cause analysis efforts (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone) and implement corrective and preventive actions to eliminate defects and prevent recurrence.
  • Drive process optimization and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality and operational efficiency.
  • Analyze quality data and KPIs (scrap, rework, defect trends) using statistical tools such as SPC and FMEA to identify opportunities and reduce variability.
  • Investigate customer complaints, returns, and nonconformities, ensuring proper documentation, timely resolution, and effective communication.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, suppliers, and customers to resolve quality issues and improve processes.
  • Support supplier quality efforts, including incoming material validation and supplier corrective actions.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and ensure compliance with quality management systems.
  • Maintain accurate quality documentation, including inspection reports, procedures, and compliance records.
  • Provide training and guidance to production personnel on quality standards, inspection methods, and best practices.
  • Participate in customer meetings and travel as needed to support quality, supplier, and customer initiatives.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge of quality assurance methods, tools, and manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis and data-driven decision-making (SPC, FMEA, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across production, engineering, and leadership teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with internal teams and external customers.
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, or a related field preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in a Quality Engineer or similar role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with steel fabrication, structural products, or material handling systems is a plus.
  • Knowledge of welding standards (e.g., AWS, AISC) highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Certification in Six Sigma (Green Belt or Black Belt) or CQE is a plus, with Black Belt strongly preferred.
  • Experience with quality tools and systems such as Minitab, SPC software, and ERP systems preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role operates in both office and manufacturing environments, with a strong emphasis on time spent on the production floor. The Quality Engineer will regularly interact with equipment, materials, and production personnel to ensure quality standards are consistently met.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout the manufacturing facility for extended periods. Frequent use of hands and inspection tools is required. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, coordination, and attention to detail.
