Position Title: Quality Technician

About the Role:

The role of the Quality Technician in our Cement Lab is to sample and analyze slurry, dust, and other designated materials; identify anomalies or quality deviations and take steps to ensure product quality is maintained. Weekends and shift work required. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for knowing and ensuring compliance with safety regulations, identifying and correcting safety hazards, and cooperating with outside inspectors as necessary.
  • Sample and analyze raw & quarry materials, raw meal, kiln feed, hot meal, bypass dust, clinker and cement samples. Identify anomalies or quality deviations and take steps to ensure product quality is maintained. Inform higher management if deviations are not corrected in a timely manner as described in Quality Control (QC) Plan.
  • Perform field work such as troubleshooting production equipment; collecting and testing water samples; measuring and adjusting liquid additive flow rates.
  • Work directly with production to collect samples and to perform whatever duties are necessary to keep the equipment running while maintaining quality.
  • Perform moisture and 200 mesh on coal pipe and coal supplier samples daily and bring dried samples to RR lab needed in accordance to current QC Sampling and Testing Plan and communicate report to QA/QC lab supervisor in established report template.
  • Communicate with and inform bulk loaders of changes in shipping instructions.
  • Collect and test water samples daily for pH. Record data in logbook and database for reporting to the Environmental Department needed in accordance to current QC Sampling and Testing Plan and communicate report to QA/QC lab supervisor in established report template.
  • Work effectively in a team environment both within the cement lab and with production shift workers.
  • Report analytical results in oral, written and electronic formats, in the timeline required so as not to affect production for an extended period.

Qualifications:

  • Technical degree in chemistry preferred.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in a chemistry lab preferred.
  • Understanding of and ability to safely operate all laboratory equipment; ability to analyze results; effective communication skills (verbal and written); must be able to successfully interact in a team environment; computer skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word Outlook).
  • Able to wear all MSHA personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Able to take samples where climbing steps, ladders and physical exertion is required.
  • May be exposed to dust, noise, heat, high elevations, and all types of weather conditions.
  • Able work at heights.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Respirator use, if needed.
