Quality Control Lab Assistant information

What does a quality control lab assistant do?

A Quality Control Lab Assistant supports laboratory operations by conducting tests and inspections on products or materials to ensure they meet specified standards. They prepare samples, operate laboratory equipment, record and analyze data, and help maintain a clean and organized lab environment. Their work helps identify defects or deviations from quality standards, contributing to the overall safety and effectiveness of products before they reach customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality control lab assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Control Lab Assistant, you need a background in chemistry or biology, attention to detail, and familiarity with laboratory procedures, often supported by an associate's degree or relevant coursework. Experience using analytical instruments such as spectrophotometers, pH meters, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is typically required. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to follow precise protocols help set top performers apart. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensuring accurate testing, regulatory compliance, and the overall reliability of laboratory results.

What are some common challenges faced by quality control lab assistants, and how can they be managed?

Quality Control Lab Assistants often face challenges such as maintaining strict adherence to standardized testing protocols, managing a high volume of samples under tight deadlines, and ensuring accurate record-keeping for compliance purposes. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with team members and supervisors. Many labs provide thorough training and encourage collaboration, which helps new assistants acclimate to the fast-paced environment while maintaining high-quality standards.

What is the difference between Quality Control Lab Assistant vs Quality Control Technician?

AspectQuality Control Lab AssistantQuality Control Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; certifications varyHigh school diploma; often additional certifications or training
Work EnvironmentLaboratory setting, supporting testing activitiesLaboratory and production environments, performing tests and inspections
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with sample preparation and data entryConducting tests, analyzing results, and ensuring quality standards

While both roles work in laboratory settings within quality assurance, the Quality Control Lab Assistant primarily supports testing processes and data management, whereas the Quality Control Technician actively performs testing and analysis to ensure product quality. The Technician role typically requires more technical skills and certifications, making it more hands-on in quality control procedures.

About TTL

Think of us as a powerhouse marketing lab, fuelled by bold ideas, innovation and the grit that built us from the ground up. We're ambitious and thrive in a fast-paced environment, always on the lookout for curious, passionate and solution-driven individuals to join our ranks.

And if you're looking to work for a purpose-driven organization that's a certified B Corp and 100% carbon-neutral, well, we might just be the perfect fit. We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer who values diversity, inclusion and a sense of humour - because let's face it, if you're not having fun while solving tough problems, what's the point?

The Role

We're looking for a Quality Assurance and Communications Specialist to join our team and serve as the last line of defence before work goes out the door. This is a role for someone with an almost-annoying attention to detail. Someone who finds the typo everyone else missed, the crooked line in a brochure, asks the question no one else thought to ask and cares deeply about craft at every level.

You'll sit at the intersection of quality assurance and communications, reviewing client-facing and internal deliverables for accuracy, consistency and clarity, while also lending your writing skills to internal comms needs & some tactical client work. You'll work closely with creative and account teams to uphold TTL's standards across every touchpoint.

What You'll Do

Proofreading & Quality Assurance

  • Proofread all client-facing deliverables including ads, decks, reports, social copy and long-form content for spelling, grammar, punctuation and style consistency.
  • Conduct thorough quality checks to verify that creative assets are free from design/production errors, align with approved briefs, brand guidelines and client specifications.
  • Fact check quotes, claims, names, locations, dates, etc.
  • Flag inconsistencies in naming conventions, dates, URLs, logos, legal disclaimers and other detail-sensitive elements.
  • Maintain and apply QC styles guides, updating them as needed to reflect evolving standards and client preferences.
  • Manage the QC stage of the production workflow, ensuring deliverables are reviewed and approved before release.

Internal Communications and Tactical Writing

  • Draft, edit and refine internal communications including team announcements, process documentation, policy updates and all-staff memos.
  • Support leadership in crafting clear, on-brand internal messaging that keeps the team informed and aligned.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing documents, onboarding materials and templates that improve team efficiency.
  • Support copy writers with client facing tactical writing and covering vacations where needed

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Partner with creative and account teams throughout the production cycle to catch issues early and provide clear, actionable feedback.
  • Build and maintain checklists and QC templates that streamline the review process across different deliverable types.
  • Participate in post-mortems and quality reviews to identify recurring issues and recommend process improvements.

What You Bring

Experience & Portfolio

  • 2-4 years of experience in a proofreading, editorial, QC or communications role, ideally within an agency or fast-paced creative environment.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing a wide range of formats including digital ads, print materials, decks and written copy.
  • Experience writing or editing internal communications is a strong asset.

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; comfortable reviewing creative files in PDF format & Figma.
  • Familiarity with project management tools to track QC stages and feedback.
  • Basic ability to review visual layouts for alignment, spacing and formatting issues, you don't need to be a designer, but an eye for craft goes a long way.

Working Style

  • Exceptionally detail-oriented, you spot the double space, the wrong apostrophe and the off-brand font without being told to look.
  • A clear and confident writer who can adapt tone and voice for different internal audiences.
  • Calm under deadline pressure and comfortable pushing back constructively when something isn't ready to ship.
  • Organized and self-directed, with the ability to manage multiple deliverables in review simultaneously.
  • A natural team player who builds trust quickly and approaches feedback with empathy, not ego.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Canadian Press (CP) style or another editorial style guide.
  • Background in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field.
  • Experience working with or reviewing bilingual (English/French) content.

What We Offer

  • 15 days of vacation annually (pro-rated).
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Hybrid work model (3 mandatory in-office days/week).
  • Extra paid stat holidays.
  • Bike-to-work incentive program.
  • A supportive environment where creatives can grow and lead.

Our Commitment
TTL is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to building an inclusive team. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and identities. If you require accommodations during the hiring process, just let us know.
