Reporting to the Quality Control leadership team, the Quality Control Analyst is responsible for performing analytical testing of raw materials, intermediates, and finished products to ensure compliance with customer specifications, regulatory requirements, and company quality standards. This role also supports the development of Quality Control Technicians by providing guidance on laboratory best practices, analytical techniques, and proper instrument operation. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and collaborative, with the ability to manage special projects, investigate quality-related issues, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Perform analytical testing of chemicals, essential oils, and fragrance compounds using Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
  • Conduct routine GC analysis of quality control samples to verify compliance with product specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform GC analysis of fragrance compounds to support product evaluation, release, and customer requirements.
  • Analyze essential oils and natural materials using GC-MS for identification, characterization, and quality verification.
  • Conduct GC-MS analysis of fragrance compounds to support quality control, investigations, and product authentication.
  • Perform laboratory-scale distillation of essential oils, natural products, and aromatic raw materials to support quality evaluation, product verification, method development, and investigative analysis.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain laboratory distillation equipment while documenting distillation parameters, yields, and analytical observations.
  • Perform extraction, duplication, and comparative analysis of finished fragrance compounds and raw materials.
  • Conduct extraction and duplication of raw materials, ingredients, and natural products to support quality investigations, reference standards, and product development.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate GC and GC-MS analytical methods to improve identification, characterization, and testing of fragrance compounds.
  • Maintain GC-MS instrumentation by performing routine source cleaning, software updates, and spectral library maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
  • Interpret chromatographic and mass spectral data, investigate atypical results, and communicate findings to Quality Control management.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation, test records, and analytical reports in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Support laboratory continuous improvement initiatives, method enhancements, and special analytical projects as assigned.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Quality Control Technicians on laboratory procedures, analytical techniques, and proper instrument operation.
  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and company quality policies to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Food Science, or a related scientific discipline; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Quality Control laboratory experience within the flavor and fragrance, essential oils, specialty chemicals, or related industry.
  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining analytical laboratory instrumentation, including Gas Chromatography (GC), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Karl Fischer titrators, and other standard laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with laboratory distillation techniques, extraction methods, and analytical method development is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of analytical chemistry principles, laboratory best practices, Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and quality systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate complex technical, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and ERP/MES platforms such as IBM iSeries, SAP, DataNinja, NetSuite, or similar enterprise systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, manage competing deadlines, and work independently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Experience mentoring or training laboratory personnel is preferred.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods and safely perform the physical requirements of a laboratory environment.
