Inspector IIOverviewThe City of Alexandria's Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) - Project Implementation is looking to hire an
Inspector II. The Inspector II examines construction projects within the City to ensure compliance with approved plans, budget, projected completion time, specifications, and related codes and regulations. The Inspector II performs technical and skilled inspection work involving the City's sanitary and storm sewers, streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and reinforced concrete.
What You Should BringThe ideal candidate should have knowledge of concrete, asphalt, sewer pipe, and reinforced concrete construction and steel construction for bridges. The candidate must have good knowledge of modern principles and practices in civil engineering, principles and methods of surveying and methods of soil engineering. The ideal candidate should have the ability to maintain accurate records. The candidate should have knowledge of erosion and sediment control plans for determining the adequacy of plans and supporting documents and experience examining erosion and sediment control activities.
The Opportunity - Examples of Work- Reviews plans & specifications and makes recommendations for improvements;
- Inspects erosion & sediment control installations;
- Performs inspects of construction projects to determine if work is being done as shown in the plans and specifications, and the specified materials are used;
- Assist the Project Manager in coordination of construction work with various utility companies, consultants, other City Departments, and when it is applicable with outside agencies such as VDOT;
- Inspects excavation permits and other related permits in the right of way to ensure public safety;
- Enforces compliance with City codes, approved plans, MOT plans, and contract specifications;
- Works with construction contractors to make necessary field adjustments;
- Represents City to assist the public, homeowner's associations, civic associations, and business owners to resolve problems associated with the City's infrastructure construction;
- Performs inspection of projects to include documentation of work performed;
- Maintains daily logs of accomplished work activities, documentation of pertinent issues and incidents;
- Performs related work as assigned.
About the BranchAs a Branch of Transportation & Environmental Services, Project Implementation is responsible for the implementation of municipal infrastructure projects including intersection improvements, stormwater infrastructure, sanitary sewer infrastructure, flood mitigation and park improvements. Project Implementation staff promote excellence in project management and sound stewardship of public trust. The branch is currently managing 61 active infrastructure projects with a total capital improvement program value of approximately $780 million. Project Implementation coordinates and plans complex, multi-departmental projects such as the Waterfront Small Area Plan Implementation and the Landmark Mall Redevelopment projects. The branch is dedicated to continuous improvement and industry best practices and is committed to the continued professional development of staff members. Minimum & Additional RequirementsMinimum: High School diploma or GED; 10 years of construction site work; asphalt and Concrete experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; a clear knowledge of civil and architectural drawings; ability to keep clear and legible reports; clean driving record; 880 hours as a plan reviewer, responsible for determining the adequacy of erosion and sediment control plans and supporting documents for approval by a program authority, or an inspector; responsibility for periodically examining the erosion and sediment control activities and premises of a land disturbing activity for consistency with the Erosion and Sediment Control Law and Regulations; or combined duties and obtaining a passing score on the certification examination administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ); or by enrolling in and completing a DEQ approved training program in the area of inspector or combined administrator within twelve months of the time of enrollment (starting with the first training course enrolled) and obtaining a passing score on the certification examination. Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of residence.
Preferred QualificationsErosion and Sediment control certification; highway safety classes college credits; construction math college credits; VDOT flagging certification; basic computer knowledge, to include Acrobat and Microsoft Office; daily use of GIS mapping program; mobile laptop, tablet, and printer experience; customer service training; hazardous materials certifications.
