The Impact You'll Make on this Role

As Supervisor Quality, this position will handle a variety of non-routine and difficult inquiries related to both analytical testing and quality assurance controls. Direct leadership responsibility for subordinates with clearly defined roles. Reviews and approvals of work results conducted by subordinates. Performs complex research and analysis and ensures compliance with established quality principles. Handles a variety of non-routine and difficult inquiries. Manage professional and support level employees within specific areas in Quality to promote continuous improvements to productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction.

  • Adapts differing techniques and methods to deal with variations in work conditions and operations to solve complex problems.
  • Supervises the development and implementation of improvements and/or solutions to work processes and tools.
  • Reports to supervisor/manager on key milestones and critical business initiatives. When necessary, the supervisor is consulted for guidance in problem areas.
  • Generally, has budget responsibility for team/work group that maintains testing equipment, external service requirements, and labor cost.
  • Makes recommendations that impact how financial resources are generated or spent.
  • Manages subordinates with clearly defined roles within the Quality Assurance and Analytical function for the site.
  • Determines priorities and timetables, assigns resources/tasks, and provides performance feedback. Accountable for the activities and results of their subordinates.
  • Coordinate the training and development needs of subordinates and other site stakeholders.
  • Supports development and implementation of functional quality control plans for the site. Ensures quality control plans and analytical testing requirements support business needs and goals; that project objectives and deadlines are met.
  • Assembles and leads project teams. Presents project recommendations to appropriate personnel that demonstrate sound planning in support of business needs and goals.
  • Handles non-routine and difficult inquiries where the solution is not immediately apparent. Most complex problem solving may require developing solutions for complex and diverse issues that may be interrelated, requiring significant interpretation and the use of strong analytical skills.
  • Apply extensive experience and knowledge of related and non-related precedents and policies.
  • Resolves issues and conflicts related to direct reports.
  • Has a considerable impact on the direct work group/team, providing leadership. Decisions may affect the operational effectiveness of multiple work groups or teams, important programs in the department, the next higher organizational tier, and/or related activities within the direct functional area.
  • Work tasks encompass concepts within multiple disciplines/practices which may include more than one department/location.
  • Working tasks might include:
    • a. Maintains and improves quality systems and measurements
    • b. Reviews and approvals non-routine and difficult functional analysis conducted by subordinates
    • c. Provides quality consulting to application engineers and business leaders.
    • d. Develops and implements quality plans, supplier control, and factory acceptance testing to customer requirements.
    • e. Investigates quality related issues with customers and engineering department to determine root cause of manufacturing failures, developing a plan of action to address related issues
    • f. Examines materials issues that are causing product failures, deficiencies, scrap, etc. with vendors and supply chain.
    • Incumbent typically communicates with direct subordinates, internal and external clients on a medium to lower level, such as department heads, and occasionally area/business leaders. As an expert, the employee also provides consulting assistance to senior management. Serve as representative of the work group or team to management as appropriate.
  • Negotiates and counsels at an advanced level with an audience which may not be knowledgeable in the subject area.
  • Demonstrates solid persuasion skills and manages differing interests and perspectives.
  • Actively participates in relevant corporate programs/initiatives, complies with professional and quality standards, complies with corporate policies and procedures, and acts in a manner consistent with 3M's values and ethical standards.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, or Engineering (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Six (6) years of quality and/or manufacturing experience in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Two (2) years of quality and/or manufacturing leadership experience in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Experience in a PSM chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with SAP, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001.
  • Knowledge of incident investigations, tier accountability, Lean manufacturing, and employee engagement practices.
  • Leadership experience in manufacturing operations with a proven ability to deliver results in safety, quality, cost, and productivity.
  • Experience developing and executing total quality management (TQM) strategies that align with business objectives.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of analytical lab operations and testing (GS-MS, HPLC for example)
