What is a QE engineer?

QE Engineers, or Quality Engineering Engineers, are professionals responsible for ensuring the quality of software products through automated and manual testing processes. They work closely with development teams to design test plans, create test cases, and implement testing strategies that identify bugs and ensure products meet quality standards. QE Engineers often use automation tools to streamline repetitive testing tasks and focus on improving software reliability, performance, and security. Their goal is to catch issues early in the development cycle and help deliver high-quality software to end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QE engineer?

To thrive as a QE (Quality Engineering) Engineer, you need a solid grasp of software testing methodologies, programming/scripting skills, and a background in computer science or a related field. Experience with automation tools (such as Selenium, JUnit, or TestNG), CI/CD systems, and knowledge of programming languages like Java or Python are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help QE Engineers identify issues and collaborate with development teams. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality software products and help streamline development processes.

What are some common challenges QE engineers face when integrating automated testing into existing development workflows?

QE Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from development teams, the complexity of legacy codebases, and ensuring that automated tests remain reliable as the application evolves. Successfully integrating automation requires strong communication with developers and product managers, as well as a solid understanding of the project's architecture. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves gradual adoption, clear documentation, and continuous collaboration to ensure that automated tests provide real value without disrupting established workflows.

What is the difference between Qe Engineer vs Software Tester?

AspectQe EngineerSoftware Tester
Primary FocusQuality assurance, process improvement, automation, and system reliabilityManual testing, bug detection, and validation of software functionalities
Required SkillsTesting tools, scripting, automation, understanding of development processesTest case creation, execution, defect reporting, attention to detail
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with development teams, involved in continuous integrationTypically performs manual testing, often in dedicated testing teams
CertificationsISTQB, CSTE, or similarOften no formal certification required, but ISTQB is common

Qe Engineers and Software Testers both focus on software quality, but Qe Engineers have a broader role including automation and process improvement, while Software Testers primarily perform manual testing. Qe Engineers often work closely with development teams to enhance testing frameworks, whereas Software Testers focus on executing test cases and reporting bugs.

Are QA engineers paid well?

QA engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, but experienced QA engineers with skills in automation tools and certifications can command higher pay. Overall, QA engineering is considered a well-paying role within the tech industry.

Job description

Amida Technology Solutions is a DC-based technology company focused on data interoperability, integrity, governance, and security. We create solutions that collect, reconcile, transform, and standardize data for business intelligence, advanced analytics, decision support, and user transactions. We specialize in taking data from inception to impact.
Our team is composed of creative, forward-looking thinkers who are passionate about using cutting-edge technology to improve lives and generate a positive impact on our country. We offer an entrepreneurial, high-growth environment that values fresh ideas, candid conversations, and authentic teamwork.
Amida Technology Solutions is seeking a Senior Quality Engineering (QE) Engineer . The successful candidate will own test strategy and quality outcomes for mission-critical government systems. This role will report to the program manager. The ideal candidate will be motivated by the opportunity to support public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private companies in transforming their data into actionable insights. The candidate must be willing and able to work 3-4 days per week at our client's site in downtown Dallas, TX.
What you will do:
  • Design, document, and maintain end-to-end test strategies covering functional, regression, integration, performance, security, and accessibility testing
  • Lead defect triage to include running recurring triage forums, setting severity and priority standards, driving root-cause analysis, and tracking defects to closure across teams
  • Build and extend automated test suites and integrate them into CI/CD pipelines so quality gates run on every build
  • Design and execute mobile automation test suites using BrowserStack, Percy, or equivalent platforms
  • Build and maintain RPA-based test workflows using UiPath or equivalent RPA platforms
  • Design and develop testing harnesses for data masking, PII/PHI redaction, and other secure test-data handling needs
  • Perform accessibility testing using Deque axe or equivalent tooling to validate Section 508/WCAG compliance
  • Define and report quality metrics (e.g., coverage, escape rate, mean time to detect, automation yield) and use them to guide release go/no-go decisions
  • Partner with product, architecture, and DevOps on requirements review, test data management, and environment readiness
  • Support compliance and audit needs, including traceability from requirements through test evidence
  • May mentor mid-level and junior QE engineers on test design technique, tooling, and review practice
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline

Required Experience:
  • At least seven years of professional experience in software quality engineering or test engineering
  • At least three years of hands-on experience with Selenium, Playwright, RestAssured, Postman/Newman, and OpenAPI/Swagger for UI, API, and contract testing
  • At least two years of mobile automation testing experience with tools such as BrowserStack or Percy
  • At least two years of experience with UiPath or other RPA automation software
  • Demonstrated ownership of test strategy design for enterprise-scale or government systems
  • Proven experience leading defect triage across multiple engineering teams and stakeholder groups
  • Experience embedding automated quality gates in CI/CD tooling (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions)
  • Experience designing and building testing harnesses for data masking and secure test-data management
  • Hands-on experience with Deque axe or equivalent tooling for Section 508/WCAG accessibility compliance testing (move this out of Preferred, since it's a required, team-wide skill)
  • Demonstrated ownership of a test data strategy: provisioning, refresh, subsetting, and environment-specific data governance

Required Skills:
  • Strong working knowledge of API and database testing, including SQL
  • Fluency with Agile delivery and defect/test management tooling such as Jira, Zephyr, TestRail, or Xray
  • Proficiency with Jira/Xray, Confluence, GitHub Actions, and Azure DevOps as the shared baseline toolset across the QE team
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Preferred:
  • Prior work on federal, state, or local government programs
  • Performance and load testing experience with JMeter or equivalent tools
  • Security testing experience with Veracode (add to the existing SAST/DAST/OWASP Top 10)
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform) and containerized environments
  • Data testing experience with Snowflake
  • Familiarity with Power BI for validating reports and dashboards
  • ISTQB Advanced Level or comparable certification
