Job purpose

The Quality Assurance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day food safety and quality activities at the facility to ensure products meet company, customer, and regulatory requirements. This position serves as the site quality representative and provides leadership to Quality Control personnel while supporting the Quality Assurance Manager in maintaining food safety systems, investigating quality concerns, coordinating audits, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

The Quality Assurance Lead works closely with Production, Sanitation, Maintenance, Warehouse, and other departments to ensure food safety and quality standards are consistently maintained throughout the facility.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Support

  • Provide daily leadership, coaching, training, and support to Quality Control personnel.
  • Ensure quality inspections and monitoring activities are completed according to established procedures.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of new Quality team members.
  • Maintain effective communication with Production and other departments on quality and food safety matters.
  • Escalate significant quality or food safety concerns to the QA Manager.

Quality Control & Process Monitoring

  • Monitor production processes to ensure compliance with product specifications and food safety requirements.
  • Conduct routine inspections of raw materials, work-in-process products, and finished goods.
  • Verify completion of production quality checks, including GMP inspections, product weights, label verification, allergen controls, and metal detector verification.
  • Respond to quality issues on the production floor and assist in determining corrective actions.
  • Maintain daily audit readiness throughout the facility.

Quality Systems & Documentation

  • Develop, revise, and maintain quality procedures, forms, records, and work instructions.
  • Review production documentation for completeness and compliance.
  • Ensure quality records are properly maintained and retained according to company requirements.
  • Support implementation of procedural changes and verify effectiveness.

Customer Complaints & Corrective Actions

  • Investigate customer complaints and internal non-conformances.
  • Participate in root cause investigations and corrective action development.
  • Prepare and maintain complaint and CAPA documentation for QA Manager review.
  • Follow up on corrective actions to verify timely completion and effectiveness.

Food Safety & Compliance Programs

  • Support and maintain facility food safety and quality programs.
  • Coordinate the Pest Control Program and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Support environmental monitoring, allergen management, sanitation validation, and other food safety programs as required.
  • Report food safety concerns and verify corrective actions are implemented.
  • Promote compliance with GMPs, Food Safety, Food Defense, and Health & Safety requirements.

Supplier & Material Quality

  • Verify incoming ingredients and packaging materials meet specification requirements.
  • Assist with supplier performance monitoring activities.
  • Issue Supplier Non-Conformance Reports when required.
  • Support investigations involving material quality concerns.

Audits & Regulatory Compliance

  • Support internal audits and routine facility inspections.
  • Assist during customer visits, regulatory inspections, and third-party audits.
  • Participate in traceability exercises, mock recalls, and recall activities as required.
  • Support implementation and maintenance of company food safety certification requirements.

Product Quality & Sensory Evaluation

  • Lead or participate in product sensory evaluations to verify product quality and consistency.
  • Monitor quality trends and escalate concerns to management.
  • Ensure retain samples are maintained and evaluated according to company requirements.

Continuous Improvement & Collaboration

  • Analyze quality data and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in cross-functional quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support standardization of quality programs with affiliated manufacturing sites.
  • Work collaboratively with Production, Maintenance, Sanitation, Warehouse, and Engineering teams to resolve quality issues.

Administrative & Other Duties

  • Coordinate submission of product samples for third-party or customer testing.
  • Maintain quality supplies and laboratory inventory.
  • Perform incident, accident, and non-conformance investigations as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Follow Health & Safety regulations, GMPs, Food Safety, and Food Defense requirements.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Science related degree or diploma (e.g., food science, chemistry, microbiology, pharmaceutical)
  • Minimum 3 years of quality control/assurance experience in food manufacturing.
  • HACCP qualification / certification.
  • Experience writing SOPs and customer complaint reports.
  • Experience performing direct and root -cause investigations of non-conformances in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Great attention to detail with accuracy, especially in regard to product specifications and production documentation.
  • Able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, including multitasking.
  • Must have shift flexibility in order to provide support; may involve some weekend work.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create and manage documents, spreadsheets, email communications, and presentations effectively.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Working conditions

  • Work is performed primarily indoors within a food manufacturing environment. Some work may involve being outside inspecting property and building for short periods of time.
  • Exposure to production areas including noise, moving equipment, temperature variations, and food ingredients.
  • Compliance with all PPE, GMP, and safety requirements.

Physical requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
