What is a QA inspector?

QA Inspectors, or Quality Assurance Inspectors, are professionals responsible for examining products and processes to ensure they meet specified quality standards. They inspect materials, components, and finished goods for defects, deviations, and compliance with regulations. QA Inspectors play a crucial role in maintaining product quality and safety by identifying issues early and suggesting corrective actions. Their work helps companies deliver reliable products and maintain customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QA inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QA Inspector, you need a solid understanding of quality standards, inspection techniques, and attention to detail, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant technical certifications. Familiarity with measurement tools like calipers and micrometers, experience with quality management systems (QMS), and sometimes ISO certification are typically required. Effective communication, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to continuous improvement are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that products meet required specifications, reduce defects, and help maintain compliance with industry standards.

What are some typical challenges a QA inspector faces when ensuring product quality?

QA Inspectors often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex technical specifications, balancing thoroughness with productivity under tight deadlines, and communicating quality issues effectively across different departments. They may also need to adapt quickly to new testing procedures or regulatory requirements. Proactive problem-solving and strong attention to detail are essential skills for overcoming these challenges and maintaining high-quality standards.

Job description

???? Quality Assurance Inspector | $22/hr + $2 Shift Differential | 4-Day Work Week

PVS Metals – Carter Lake, IA (Near Downtown Omaha) | 2nd Shift: Mon–Thu, 3:00 PM – 1:30 AM

Be the Standard. Protect the Quality. Own the Floor.

At Owen Metals Group, quality isn't a department — it's a culture. We've built a reputation for precision and excellence in steel manufacturing, and we're looking for a Quality Assurance Inspector who takes that personally. Someone with a sharp eye, the confidence to speak up when something's off, and the discipline to follow processes without cutting corners.

This isn't a passive role. You'll have real authority on the floor — including the power to stop production when standards aren't met. If that kind of responsibility excites you, read on.

The Details
  • Starting pay: $22.00/hr
  • Shift differential: +$2.00/hr on 2nd shift — bringing your effective rate to $24.00/hr
  • 2nd shift hours: Mon–Thu, 3:00 PM – 1:30 AM
  • Training: 1st shift, Mon–Thu, 5:00 AM – 3:30 PM before transitioning to 2nd shift
  • Schedule: 4-day work week — your Fridays are always free

What You'll Do

  • Perform weekly tool and gauge checks to ensure measurement accuracy across the floor
  • Verify operator forms and system entries to confirm everything lines up
  • Conduct random inspections on flat, formed, and machined parts — checking against customer specifications
  • Approve conforming parts with your official QC sticker, or flag and quarantine anything that doesn't make the cut
  • Collaborate with the Quality Manager to investigate suspect materials and resolve issues
  • Complete final visual inspections and verify shipping details for accuracy
  • Exercise full stop-work authority when quality standards aren't met — you're empowered to protect our reputation
  • Support special projects and pitch in where the team needs you

What We're Looking For

  • 1–2 years in manufacturing or quality assurance — if you have the right mindset and attention to detail, we'll teach you the rest
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings
  • Hands-on experience with precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers
  • Basic proficiency with computers and Excel
  • Hawk-eyed attention to detail with the discipline to follow processes consistently
  • Strong communicator who can give and receive feedback professionally
  • Ability to stay organized and composed under pressure
  • Available and committed to a consistent 2nd shift schedule
