Is QA engineer a stressful job?

A QA engineer's role involves testing software to identify bugs and ensure quality, which can be demanding during tight deadlines or complex projects. The job often requires attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and sometimes working overtime, but stress levels vary depending on the work environment and workload.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QA Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, programming or scripting knowledge, and familiarity with quality assurance methodologies, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with test automation tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems, and sometimes certifications like ISTQB are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help QA Engineers identify issues and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills ensure the delivery of reliable, high-quality software products that meet user requirements and business goals.

Are QA engineers paid well?

QA engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level positions may start lower, but with skills in automation tools and testing frameworks, salaries tend to increase significantly for experienced professionals. Overall, QA engineering is considered a well-paying role within the tech industry.

What is a QA engineer?

QA Engineers, or Quality Assurance Engineers, are professionals responsible for ensuring that software products meet established quality standards before they are released to customers. They design and execute tests, identify bugs or issues, and work closely with development teams to resolve problems. QA Engineers play a crucial role in the software development lifecycle by preventing defects, improving product reliability, and ensuring a smooth user experience. Their work may involve manual testing, automated testing, and creating test documentation.

What is the difference between Qa Engineer vs Software Tester?

AspectQa EngineerSoftware Tester
CertificationsISTQB, CSTE, CSQAISTQB, CSQA (optional)
Work EnvironmentInvolved in automation, process improvement, and quality strategyPrimarily manual testing and test case execution
ResponsibilitiesDesigning test plans, automation, defect analysis, quality assuranceExecuting test cases, reporting bugs, verifying fixes
Industry UsageUsed across software development companies, especially in Agile and DevOpsCommon in traditional and Agile environments

The main difference between a Qa Engineer and a Software Tester lies in their scope and responsibilities. Qa Engineers typically focus on automation, quality processes, and strategic testing, while Software Testers mainly perform manual testing and bug reporting. Both roles are essential for ensuring software quality, but Qa Engineers often have a broader role in quality assurance and process improvement.

How does a QA engineer typically collaborate with developers and other team members during the software development lifecycle?

QA Engineers work closely with developers, product managers, and sometimes UX/UI designers throughout the software development lifecycle. They participate in sprint planning meetings, provide input on testability during requirements discussions, and collaborate with developers to understand new features and identify potential issues early. Regular communication helps ensure that quality standards are met and bugs are addressed promptly, resulting in a more efficient release process and higher-quality products. This collaborative environment also provides QA Engineers with opportunities to expand their technical knowledge and grow within the team.

What does a QA engineer do?

As a QA engineer, you monitor the development process and design troubleshooting tests to ensure software or manufacturing materials have no significant issues. If your tests identify problems with the software, you then send the review and feedback to the product design team so they can make plans to debug the software and return it to you for further testing. Your duties include designing various tests, scenarios, and scripts to assess whether or not a piece of software is ready for release. You also track and document your findings using a bug tracking system and participate in design review meetings to provide reports on your results.

Quality Assurance Engineer

BRUNT Workwear

North Reading, MA โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Posted 8 days ago

Job description

BRUNT is a fast-growing workwear brand built for the trades. As we scale our digital and operational platforms, we are committed to delivering reliable, high-quality experiences across every system our business and customers depend on. The Quality Assurance Engineer is a critical role within our lean DevOps team, responsible for ensuring the integrity and performance of BRUNT's commerce and operational technology stack.ย

WHAT YOU'LL DO:ย

As the Quality Assurance Engineer, you will own the QA function at BRUNT as our sole internal QA resource. Reporting directly to the SVP of Technology, you will be responsible for building and executing test strategies that span our full platform ecosystem, from customer-facing Shopify storefronts and B2B wholesale catalogs to back-end ERP, planning, and data systems.ย

You will work cross-functionally across the Technology, Merchandising, Operations, and Retail teams to define testing requirements, coordinate user acceptance testing with stakeholders, and ensure that every platform release meets BRUNT's quality standards before it reaches our customers or internal users. You will also play a foundational role in shaping how QA is practiced at BRUNT, with the opportunity to implement tooling, processes, and automation infrastructure that scales with the business.ย

HOW YOU'LL DO IT:ย

TEST STRATEGY & PLANNINGย

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive test plans, test cases, and test scripts for all platforms within the BRUNT technology stack.ย
  • Define QA scope and acceptance criteria in collaboration with the SVP of Technology, product owners, and cross-functional stakeholders at the start of each sprint.ย
  • Establish and continuously improve QA processes, standards, and documentation practices across the DevOps team.ย

PLATFORM & INTEGRATION TESTINGย

  • Execute end-to-end functional testing across BRUNT's Shopify platform, including the DTC eCommerce storefront, B2B wholesale catalog, and Retail Point of Sale environments.ย
  • Perform integration and interface testing across back-end platforms including NetSuite, Toolio, Vibe IQ, Centric, Celigo, and Google BigQuery to validate data accuracy, workflow integrity, and system interoperability.ย
  • Conduct regression testing following sprint releases, platform updates, and configuration changes to ensure existing functionality is not degraded.
  • Validate data flows and synchronization between Shopify and integrated back-end systems, identifying and documenting discrepancies or failures.ย

AGILE & SPRINT EXECUTIONย

  • Participate actively in sprint ceremonies including planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives within 2-4 week sprint cycles.ย
  • Manage and prioritize QA workload across concurrent sprint initiatives, ensuring testing is completed within sprint timelines.ย
  • Log, track, and manage defects through their full lifecycle in Jira, providing clear reproduction steps, severity classifications, and supporting documentation.ย

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COORDINATIONย

  • Partner with Merchandising, Operations, Wholesale, and Retail teams to facilitate user acceptance testing (UAT), gathering and incorporating feedback into test cycles.ย
  • Serve as the QA point of contact for non-technical stakeholders, translating business requirements into testable scenarios and communicating testing outcomes clearly.ย
  • Collaborate with developers and engineers to ensure defects are understood, prioritized, and resolved in a timely manner.ย

AUTOMATION & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENTย

  • Evaluate, select, and implement a test automation framework suited to BRUNT's Shopify-based and integrated platform environment.ย
  • Develop automated regression test suites to reduce manual testing overhead over time and increase release confidence.ย
  • Identify opportunities to improve test coverage, reduce defect escape rates, and shorten QA cycle times.ย

DOCUMENTATION & REPORTINGย

  • Maintain organized, version-controlled test documentation within Jira and Monday.com, aligned to sprint and project milestones.ย
  • Produce clear QA status reports and release readiness assessments for the BRUNT Technology leadership and relevant stakeholders.ย
  • Track and report on key quality metrics including defect density, test coverage, and pass/fail rates over time.ย

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:ย

  • 3-5 years of QA engineering experience in an eCommerce, SaaS, or technology-driven environment.ย
  • Demonstrated experience testing Shopify or comparable eCommerce platforms, including storefront, checkout, and back-office functionality.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP, planning, or operational platform integration testing (experience with NetSuite, or similar systems is a plus).ย
  • Proficiency with Jira for defect tracking and test management, and familiarity with Monday.com or comparable project management tools.ย
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with structured sprint cycles.ย
  • Familiarity with API testing tools such as Postman for validating system integrations and data exchange.ย
  • Working knowledge of Git and version-controlled development workflows.ย
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail and the ability to identify root causes of complex, multi-system issues.ย
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and influence testing practices across teams without direct authority.ย
  • Self-directed and comfortable operating as a solo QA practitioner in a lean, fast-paced environment.ย
  • Experience with test automation frameworks (e.g., Cypress, Playwright, Selenium) and the ability to design and implement an automation strategy from the ground up is strongly preferred.ย
  • Familiarity with data validation and querying in Google BigQuery or similar data platforms is a plus.ย
  • Must be 18+ and able to reliably commute to the work location.ย
  • Full-time availability, including occasional evening or weekend support during major platform releases or go-live events.ย
  • Ability to commute to our office location 4x per week
