What does a Python ML Developer do?

A Python ML Developer designs, builds, and deploys machine learning models using the Python programming language. They work with large datasets, clean and process data, select appropriate algorithms, and use libraries like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn to implement solutions. Their work often involves collaborating with data scientists and engineers to integrate machine learning models into applications. Additionally, they may be responsible for testing, tuning, and optimizing models to achieve the best possible performance in real-world scenarios.

What are some common challenges Python ML Developers face when deploying machine learning models to production?

Python ML Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring model scalability, managing dependencies, and maintaining reproducibility when deploying models into production environments. Integrating machine learning models with existing systems can require close collaboration with DevOps and software engineering teams to streamline workflows and automate deployment pipelines. Additionally, monitoring model performance over time and handling data drift are crucial responsibilities to ensure continued accuracy and reliability of deployed solutions.

Will MLE be replaced by AI?

Machine Learning Engineers (MLEs) design, develop, and maintain AI and machine learning systems. While AI automation tools can handle certain tasks, MLEs are essential for creating, optimizing, and interpreting complex models, making complete replacement unlikely in the near term. MLEs need skills in programming, data analysis, and model deployment to adapt to evolving AI technologies.

What is a $900000 AI job?

A $900,000 AI job typically refers to a high-paying position in artificial intelligence, such as senior machine learning engineer or AI research director, often requiring advanced skills in deep learning, data science, and programming with tools like Python and TensorFlow. Such roles usually involve leadership, strategic planning, and extensive experience in the field.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

For a Python ML Developer, roles that require complex problem-solving, creativity, and human judgment are likely to persist, such as AI research scientist, data scientist, and software engineer. These jobs involve designing, interpreting, and improving AI models, which currently require advanced expertise, critical thinking, and domain knowledge that AI cannot fully replicate. Continuous learning and staying updated with new tools and techniques are essential for long-term career resilience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python ML Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python ML Developer, you need strong programming skills in Python, a solid understanding of machine learning algorithms, and a background in mathematics or statistics, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools and libraries such as TensorFlow, scikit-learn, PyTorch, and version control systems like Git is essential, along with experience using data visualization and cloud platforms. Critical soft skills include problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication to collaborate with cross-functional teams and explain complex models to stakeholders. These skills ensure the successful development, deployment, and maintenance of machine learning solutions that drive business value.

Job description

Team Charter:
The Cloud Engineering team is dedicated to maintaining and evolving cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, Application Security, Change Management, and Backend application golden templates. We are the backbone of the technical organization, ensuring the foundation of our services is robust, secure, and efficient.
About the role:
We are looking for a Senior Cloud Engineer to join our Cloud Engineering team. This team is tasked with ensuring scalability, reliability, and security for all backend services and keeping the SDLC running smoothly for engineers across the company.
As a senior member of the team, you will own meaningful pieces of our cloud platform end-to-end - from design through deployment and operation - while helping shape the standards, tooling, and golden templates that the rest of the engineering organization builds on. You will balance deep, hands-on technical ownership with mentoring teammates and influencing the technical direction of the systems that power a large-scale mobile marketplace.
What we love about this role:
  • Scale & Impact: You will work on systems that drive the end-user experience and support every technical team across the organization, operating across a multi-account AWS and GCP footprint.
  • Ownership: You will own critical infrastructure and platform capabilities end-to-end, making architectural decisions that affect reliability, security, and cost at scale.
  • Force Multiplier: The templates, pipelines, and tooling you build raise the productivity and safety of every engineer at OfferUp.
  • Emerging Technology: You will help bring new capabilities - including AI/ML developer tooling and infrastructure - into the hands of our engineers.

In this role, you will design, build, and operate the cloud infrastructure, platform tooling, and CI/CD systems that underpin OfferUp's core applications. Day to day, that means you will:
  • Build cloud infrastructure as code - design, implement, and maintain AWS and GCP infrastructure with Terraform, optimizing for reliability, security, and cost.
  • Own our Kubernetes & GitOps platform - run and evolve EKS/GKE (cluster upgrades, Envoy/Gloo networking, Helm, ArgoCD delivery).
  • Keep the SDLC fast and safe - build CI/CD pipelines and developer workflows (GitHub Actions, monorepo tooling, JFrog Artifactory), and maintain the backend "golden templates" and shared libraries the wider org builds on.
  • Lead platform migrations end-to-end - plan, execute, and de-risk observability, data-store, Kubernetes, and multi-account migrations, including rollback strategy.
  • Drive operational excellence & security - own observability in Datadog and on-call, remediate CVEs, manage secrets and access controls (Cloudflare/ZTNA, Okta, SSO, Workload Identity Federation), and optimize cloud cost.
  • Multiply the team - enable AI/ML developer tooling (Amazon Bedrock, Claude, AI-assisted workflows), lead design and code reviews, set technical standards, mentor engineers, and partner with other teams.

You'll thrive in this role if you have:
  • Experience & Education: 5-8 years in cloud engineering, infrastructure, platform, DevOps, or SRE roles; Bachelor's in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Cloud & Infrastructure as Code: Deep, hands-on AWS (ideally GCP) - EKS/GKE, Lambda, networking, IAM, S3, Kinesis, OpenSearch, Route53 - managed declaratively with Terraform at scale.
  • Containers & Delivery: Solid experience with Kubernetes (EKS/GKE), Helm, GitOps (ArgoCD), and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions or similar) in a monorepo or multi-service environment.
  • Observability & Operations: Modern observability tooling (Datadog or similar) for metrics, logs, traces, and alerting; supporting production systems, on-call, and debugging complex distributed systems.
  • Coding: Proficiency in at least one of Java, TypeScript, Python, or Go for automation, tooling, and platform development; comfort with scripting and SQL.
  • Communication & Leadership: Able to communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences, lead through influence, and mentor other engineers.

Helpful, but not required:
  • Experience with edge and zero-trust networking (Cloudflare, Envoy/Gloo).
  • Experience operating data and streaming infrastructure (Kinesis, Flink, Redis/Valkey, Confluent/Kafka).
  • Experience enabling AI/ML infrastructure or developer tooling (Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker, or LLM-based developer workflows).
  • Experience with security and compliance practices, change management, and incident management at scale.
  • Experience with GCP Workload Identity Federation and cross-cloud (AWSโ†”GCP) integrations.
