The main difference between a Python Mechanical Engineer and a Mechanical Design Engineer lies in their focus areas. Python Mechanical Engineers combine programming skills with mechanical engineering knowledge to develop automation and simulation tools, while Mechanical Design Engineers focus on creating physical product designs using CAD software. Both roles are essential in engineering projects but serve different functions within the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles, strong programming skills in Python, and typically a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation and modeling tools like ANSYS or SolidWorks, as well as experience with Python libraries such as NumPy and pandas, is highly beneficial. Problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability set candidates apart in this role. These skills are essential for efficiently designing, analyzing, and automating engineering processes, leading to innovative and optimized mechanical solutions.

How do Python Mechanical Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during product development?

Python Mechanical Engineers often work closely with electrical engineers, software developers, and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Their role involves integrating Python-based automation and simulation tools with mechanical design processes, which requires clear communication and coordination to ensure compatibility and efficiency. Regular meetings, collaborative project management platforms, and shared documentation are commonly used to align goals and resolve technical challenges. This cross-disciplinary teamwork not only enhances product quality but also provides valuable opportunities for professional growth and learning.

What does a Python Mechanical Engineer do?

A Python Mechanical Engineer is a professional who combines mechanical engineering expertise with proficiency in the Python programming language. They often use Python to automate simulations, analyze engineering data, create custom computational tools, and develop scripts for design optimization. Their work can involve tasks such as automating CAD processes, running finite element analysis, or integrating hardware and software systems. This combination of skills is increasingly valuable in industries that emphasize digital engineering and automation.

Job description

Job Description

About the role:

A Diagnostic and ETRS Calibration Engineer plans and executes testing activities to develop and calibrate transmission diagnostic and Electronic Transmission Range Selection (ETRS) features, ensuring compliance with OBD regulations and alignment with system safety requirements. This role operates within a collaborative team environment while serving as a key contributor to all transmission controls programs.

The Calibration Engineer, Transmission Diagnostic & ETRS is responsible for validating ETRS systems, diagnostic algorithms, and associated calibrations through a combination of test benches, dynamometers, vehicle testing, and system simulation methods. Additionally, this role involves developing, maintaining, and executing comprehensive test plans to ensure proper integration of diagnostic algorithms within transmission and vehicle embedded systems.

Key deliverables include calibration guides, detailed test plans, thorough documentation of test results, production-released diagnostic calibrations, and certification documentation. Calibration engineers are engaged throughout the full product lifecycle-from early development and validation to product launch and post-production support.

This position is well-suited for individuals who are innovative, detail-oriented, and passionate about emissions control systems and vehicle safety.

What You'll Do:

  • Develop calibrations of transmission diagnostic and ETRS features to meet performance, compliance, and customer expectations.
  • Plan and Execute test activities using simulation, bench testing, HIL, dynamometer, and in-vehicle methods.
  • Analyze test data, document results in engineering reports, and help investigate test non-conformities and issue root causes.
  • Help develop and maintain test plans, calibration procedures, and calibration guides to support robust feature development and validation.
  • Work with algorithm, controls, and system safety engineers to support new function development, issue resolution, and test procedure improvements.
  • Support vehicle development, durability, warranty, and problem-resolution activities for assigned ETRS and transmission programs.
  • Participate in peer reviews, technical reviews, and program milestone discussions while communicating status and key findings to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to tool, process, or data-handling improvements that reduce manual effort and improve test efficiency.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 2+ years of automotive engineering experience
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in calibration, diagnostics, or transmission/powertrain development or similar
  • Working knowledge of vehicle systems, embedded controls, or diagnostics
  • Exposure to OBDII regulations (CARB familiarity is a plus)
  • Experience with calibration and data tools (e.g., INCA, CANalyzer, vSpy, or similar)
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with shifting priorities
Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to support vehicle testing activities
  • Ability to travel occasionally (<5%)

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Exposure to transmission systems, ETRS, or broader powertrain operational principles.
  • Transmission or Engine calibration experience
  • Transmission operational knowledge
  • Experience with HIL, system simulation, dyno testing, or in-vehicle development tools and methods.
  • Familiar with Python, C, or automation tools used for test execution or data processing.
  • Experience with Serial Data busses, including CAN, GMLAN, LIN
  • DFSS Black Belt certification
