Job description

Job Summary:
Owls in this role prototype, develop, and release code to bring Owlchemy's ideas to life.
Responsibilities:
  • Implement shaders, graphic systems, and visual tools based on direction from Design and Art teams including task owner
  • Assist with porting to new platforms accounting for best practices based on engine and platform requirements
  • Create tools to assist production as needed
  • Assist with optimization, especially of graphics-related issues, utilizing profiling tools and coding best practices
  • Develop and test code, fix bugs, and profile to optimize code as directed
  • Follow engineering best practices, development processes, and coding standards
  • Take ownership of tasks and authored features, ensuring owned features can be maintained and provide technical and design leadership for owned tasks
  • Seek feedback on owned tasks, including via playtests, other Owls and stakeholders
  • Evaluate new XR hardware and assist with R&D efforts
  • Collaborate with (or act as) Owners to break down large deliverables into more discrete tasking and provide accurate estimates to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with Owls cross-departmentally to meet task goals and determine code requirements
  • Keep up to date on the latest in development practices for Unity and XR and ensure distribution of that knowledge throughout team
  • Mentor other Owls on graphics best practices through one to one discussions, coding explanations, code reviews, and documentation creation, etc.

Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong, clear and proactive communicator across a variety of disciplines and levels
  • Deep Unity Programing Expertise (C#, HLSL)
  • Strong understanding of Unity's Scriptable Render Pipeline and Universal Render Pipeline and underlying rendering technologies like Vulkan and OpenGL
  • Cross programming expertise (C++, Java, Python, etc.)
  • Deep graphics optimization expertise (Unity Profile, RenderDoc, hardware specifics)
  • Experience with XR platforms, tile-based renderers, and related technologies strongly preferred

Required Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • 7+ years of games programming experience (with at least 3 years in graphics programming)
  • Good understanding of all other disciplines in game development
  • At least 1 shipped title

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • 10+ years of graphics programming experience
  • Appreciation of puns (or at least the ability to groan at them)

Physical Requirements:
  • Owls must be able to use virtual reality headsets but are not expected to own one.

Salary Range:
  • $150,000 - $180,000 USD/year

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, work from home, 40-hours per week position. Core hours of work are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT.
Travel:
For Owls working outside of the Austin, TX area, travel to Austin may be required 4 to 6 times per year.
