How does a Python for Finance professional typically collaborate with other departments within a financial organization?

Python for Finance professionals frequently work alongside departments such as data analytics, risk management, and portfolio management. They often translate complex financial models into scalable code, automate data processes, and support decision-making by providing actionable insights through data analysis. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as these professionals must understand the specific needs of stakeholders and ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. Regular meetings, code reviews, and cross-functional project teams are common structures within the work environment.

What is Python for Finance?

Python for Finance refers to the use of the Python programming language for financial analysis, modeling, trading, and data visualization. Financial professionals use Python to automate data processing, analyze large financial datasets, build quantitative models, and develop trading algorithms. Its vast ecosystem of libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and Matplotlib makes Python a popular choice in the finance industry for tasks ranging from risk management to portfolio optimization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Developer in Finance, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Developer in Finance, you need strong programming skills in Python, a solid understanding of financial concepts, and often a degree in computer science, finance, or a related field. Job description

Starting base salary $80,000 - $100,000 CAD
Plus Bonus, Equity & Benefits
*Opensignal’s salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range reflects the typical starting salaries for new hires and does not reflect that maximum salary for the role over time.

Build data products that shape global telecom decisions
At Opensignal, we don’t just process data, we turn billions of real-world data points into the insights that drive how telecom operators compete, invest, and grow.
We’re looking for a Data Engineer who wants to do meaningful work at scale. If you enjoy building robust pipelines, solving complex data problems, and seeing your work directly influence real-world strategy, this role is for you.

What you’ll do

  • Own and scale data pipelines processing massive datasets using Spark and Scala on AWS
    using agentic AI tools.
  • Transform raw data into high-impact insights used by global customers and analysts
  • Design and build resilient data systems with a focus on performance, quality, and reliability
  • Partner with Data Scientists, Product, and Analytics teams to turn ideas into production-ready data products
  • Debug, optimise, and continuously improve pipelines through deep root cause analysis
  • Champion engineering best practices, testing, CI/CD, and clean, maintainable code

Why this role stands out

  • Real impact: Your work directly influences customer acquisition and retention strategies for major telecom players
  • True ownership: You won’t just contribute; you’ll own pipelines and shape how data flows across products
  • Scale complexity: Work with large, messy, real-world datasets—not toy problems
  • Collaborative environment: Work closely with highly skilled Data Scientists and Engineers globally
  • Growth opportunity: Stretch into more senior responsibilities as you deepen your expertise

What you bring

  • 2–5+ years building data pipelines with Apache Spark
  • Strong coding skills in Scala (or Java with willingness to learn Scala)
  • Confidence writing complex, performant SQL
  • Hands-on experience with AWS (S3, EC2, EMR or similar)
  • A solid understanding of data pipelines, ETL/ELT, and distributed systems
  • A natural curiosity, you enjoy digging into data issues and figuring out the “why”
  • Strong collaboration skills, you’re comfortable working across teams

Nice to have (but not essential)

  • Experience in full agentic AI coding using Codex or Claude.
  • Experience with Airflow or similar orchestration tools
  • Exposure to Python for data workflows
  • Familiarity with Redshift, Athena, or other analytical databases
  • Experience with ML/data science workflows in production
