What Does a Python Developer Do?

As a Python developer, your job is to use the Python programming language to develop, implement, and debug a project. In this role, you may create an application for your employer, design the framework for your code, build tools as necessary to get the job done, create websites, or publish new services. Python developers often work with data collection and analytics to create useful answers to questions and provide insight where it's needed most. Like most programming positions, the specifics of this job vary based on the needs of your employer. Some Python developers work as independent contractors instead of being exclusive to one company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Developer, you need strong programming skills in Python, a solid understanding of algorithms and data structures, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with frameworks like Django or Flask, version control systems such as Git, and knowledge of databases and cloud services are commonly required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication help developers collaborate and deliver high-quality code. These skills and qualities are vital to building efficient, scalable software solutions and contributing effectively to development teams.

What are some common challenges Python Developers face when working on large-scale projects?

Python Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as managing codebase complexity, ensuring consistent code style among team members, and optimizing application performance. Collaboration with other developers becomes essential, often requiring the use of version control systems and code review processes. Additionally, integrating Python code with other technologies or legacy systems can present unique compatibility and testing hurdles. Proactively adopting best practices like modular architecture and thorough documentation can help mitigate these issues.

Aircall

Seattle, WA โ€ข Remote

$139.40K - $183.80K/yr

Full-time

Posted 6 days ago

Job description

Aircall is a unicorn, AI-powered customer communications platform used by 22,000+ companies worldwide to drive revenue, resolve issues faster, and scale customer-facing teams. Weโ€™re redefining customer communications by bringing voice, SMS, WhatsApp, and AI together into one seamless workspace.
ย
Our momentum comes from a simple idea: help teams work smarter, not harder. Aircallโ€™s AI Voice Agent automates routine calls, AI Assist streamlines post-call work, and AI Assist Pro delivers real-time guidance so people can do their best work. The result is higher revenue, faster resolutions, and teams that scale with confidence.
ย
Aircall is headquartered in Paris, our European HQ, with a strong North American presence anchored in Seattle, our North American HQ, and teams across Madrid, London, Berlin, San Francisco, New York City, Sydney, and Mexico City. Weโ€™ve built a product customers love and a business thatโ€™s scaling quickly, backed by world-class investors and driven by rapid AI innovation across multiple product lines.
At Aircall, youโ€™ll join a company in motion. Weโ€™re ambitious, product-driven, and execution-focused, with visible impact, fast decisions, and real growth.
ย
How we work at Aircall: Weโ€™re customer-obsessed, data-driven, and focused on delivering meaningful outcomes. We value ownership, continuous learning, and thoughtful speed. If you thrive in a collaborative, fast-moving environment where trust and impact matter, youโ€™ll feel at home here.

Within Aircall, we are launching a specialized New Product Unit to build the future of autonomous sales. We are improving the AI Orchestration Layerโ€”a system that records and understands every customer interaction (calls, video, email, WhatsApp) to autonomously execute sales workflows: CRM updates, follow-ups, task creation, and coaching insights.ย  Our long-term vision is to evolve this into a self-improving, agentic Sales OSโ€”where specialized AI agents collaborate, coordinate, and continuously optimize the revenue process.

The Role

Weโ€™re looking for a strong Senior Python Engineer whoโ€™s eager to go beyond traditional backend development.

This role is for someone ambitiousโ€”someone who takes pride in building things well, but knows how to move fast in a startup environment. You strike the right balance between clean architecture and pragmatism, between perfection and progress.

Youโ€™re energized by hard technical problemsโ€”distributed systems, AI orchestration, architectural trade-offs, performance, and scalability. You can go deep when needed, but youโ€™re equally focused on shipping, learning, and iterating quickly.

Youโ€™re curious by nature, committed to continuous improvement, and excited to bring the most effective modern approachesโ€”whether agentic patterns or AI-augmented development workflowsโ€”into real-world production.

This isnโ€™t just another engineering role. Itโ€™s an opportunity to help build the intelligence layer behind a next-generation autonomous Sales OS.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design and implement production-grade Python services with clean architecture and strong engineering discipline.ย
  • Architect scalable, distributed systems using Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles.ย
  • Integrate with external SaaS systems (CRMs, dialers, meeting tools, OAuth providers).ย
    • Optimize performance, latency, cost, and reliability of AI-driven systems.ย
  • Build and orchestrate LLM-powered agents (planning, reasoning, tool usage, memory).ย
  • Develop internal frameworks to manage:ย
    • Agent coordinationย
    • Tool executionย
    • Memory layersย
    • Event-driven workflowsย
  • Work closely with AI engineers, product, and founders to transform complex sales workflows into autonomous processes.ย
  • Use AI coding assistants effectively and experiment with AI-augmented development workflows.ย
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 7+ years of strong backend engineering experience.ย
  • [REQUIRED] Advanced Python expertise (including async programming, type hints, architecture patterns, and testing), with a minimum of 1 year of recent professional experience
  • [REQUIRED] Experience developing APIs in Python (e.g., Flask, Django, or FastAPI)
  • Experience designing scalable distributed systems.ย
  • You design thoughtful, well-architected systems and write clean, high-quality code, with a focus on performance and long-term maintainability.
  • Experience with GCP (preferred) or AWS.ย
  • Mindset: Youโ€™re energized by building systems that can reason and take actionโ€”not just generate responses.
  • You actively leverage AI coding assistants and are driven to push the boundaries of AI-augmented engineering.
  • You thrive in fast-paced startup environments where ownership is real and impact is immediate.
  • Strong communication skills are essentialโ€”youโ€™ll collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders, and stay deeply connected to our users and the problems theyโ€™re trying to solve.
  • Fluency in English is required; Spanish is a plus.
Tech Stack
  • Backend: Python, FastAPI, Celery, PostgreSQL, uv (package-manager)ย
  • Frontend: NextJS, Tailwindย
  • DevOps: Google Cloud, Kubernetesย
This is not including equity and other benefits. The actual salary offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.
