Job description

This is OUR story... and YOUR next chapterAt HCA Healthcare, our Digital Transformation and Innovation (DT&I) team is redefining what’s possible inpatient care. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, automation, and digital technologies, DT&I is helping drive meaningful improvements in clinical outcomes, reduce manual workload, and expand the reach of our care teams. If you're passionate about using technology to improve human life, this is where your work truly mattersWhat you will accomplish in this role

The AI Incubation Lab Intern will support hands-on experimentation, prototyping, and lab operations for our AI incubation efforts in Lake Nona, including work related to Ambient AI, computer vision, agentic workflows, and the Hospital Room of the Future initiative. This role is ideal for a technical person who enjoys building, testing, wiring, troubleshooting, and learning across software, AI, and physical systems.

The intern will work closely with the AI Incubation team, researchers, engineers, vendors, and innovation partners to help translate early ideas into functional prototypes. This may include setting up AI-enabled devices, configuring development environments, experimenting with cameras, microphones, sensors, displays, Arduino or Raspberry Pi-style devices, and supporting small electronics or edge-computing experiments in the lab.

This role is not focused on production software delivery. Instead, it is focused on rapid learning, proof-of-concept development, technical exploration, and helping maintain a physical lab environment where multiple incubation initiatives can be tested safely and effectively.

The ideal candidate is a curious builder who likes to take things apart, figure out how they work, and put them back together in new ways. They should be comfortable writing code, wiring sensors, testing devices, debugging hardware/software issues, and learning new AI tools quickly. This person does not need to be an expert in every area, but they should have enough technical range to move between software, AI, and small electronics without being intimidated.

They should be energized by early-stage experimentation, where the goal is often to learn what is possible before a polished enterprise solution exists. A strong candidate may have personal projects, hackathon experience, robotics club experience, maker-space experience, GitHub projects, Arduino/Raspberry Pi projects, or prior lab/research experience that demonstrates hands-on curiosity.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Support hands-on prototyping for AI incubation projects involving computer vision, ambient sensing, agentic AI, and connected devices.
  • Assist with setup, configuration, and troubleshooting of lab equipment, including cameras, microphones, displays, sensors, edge devices, and other AI-enabled hardware.
  • Build small proof-of-concept applications using C/C++, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar programming languages.
  • Assist with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, microcontroller, sensor, or small electronics experiments as needed.
  • Help install, organize, document, and maintain equipment within the AI Incubation Lab.
  • Support integration testing across software, hardware, and physical room setups.
  • Help install, organize, document, and maintain equipment within the AI Incubation Lab.
  • Work with researchers, engineers, vendors, and internal teams to support prototype setup and testing.
  • Support demos, walkthroughs, and proof-of-concept showcases by preparing equipment, environments, and prototype materials.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized, and repeatable lab environment for experimentation.

Education & Experience:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, AI/ML, Human-Computer Interaction, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field. - Required
  • Exposure to electrical engineering concepts, embedded systems, microcontrollers, sensors, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar hardware platforms. - Required
  • Comfortable working in a lab-style environment where requirements may be ambiguous and experimentation is expected. - Required
  • Hands-on experience building software prototypes, scripts, automations, or small applications. – Required

Work Location/Schedule:

  • UCF Lake Nona
  • Onsite - M-F, 8am – 5pm

Internship Duration and Hours:

  • 3 months, with potential to extend to 6 months
  • 40 hours/week

Hourly Pay:

  • $25-$30/hour

Visa Sponsorship:

  • Not offered, now or in the future
