What is a Python data scientist?

A Python Data Scientist is a professional who uses Python programming language and its data analysis libraries to extract insights from large datasets. They apply statistical techniques, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization tools to solve business problems and make data-driven decisions. Python Data Scientists often work with tools like pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and Jupyter notebooks to manipulate data and build predictive models. Their role typically involves collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting complex data to help organizations make informed decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by Python data scientists when working with large datasets?

Python Data Scientists often encounter challenges related to processing and analyzing large datasets, such as memory limitations and slow computation times. To address these, professionals typically use libraries like Pandas, Dask, or PySpark to optimize data handling and leverage parallel computing. Collaborating closely with data engineers and IT teams can also help in setting up efficient data pipelines and scalable infrastructure. Staying updated with best practices in data preprocessing and model optimization is crucial for managing these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of statistics, machine learning, and proficiency in Python programming, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools and libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and version control systems like Git is essential. Problem-solving, curiosity, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for extracting actionable insights from data, building predictive models, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Python Data Scientist vs Data Analyst?

Python Data Scientists focus on building predictive models and advanced analytics using Python, while Data Analysts primarily interpret data through visualization and reporting. Both roles require strong analytical skills, but Python Data Scientists typically have more programming and machine learning expertise, making them suitable for complex data projects.

How much do Python data scientists make?

Python data scientists typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in machine learning and big data can command higher salaries, often exceeding $150,000. Compensation may also include bonuses and stock options in some companies.

Is Python good for data science?

Python is widely used by data scientists due to its simplicity, extensive libraries like Pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn, and strong community support. It enables efficient data analysis, modeling, and visualization, making it a preferred programming language in the data science field.

Job description

Data Scientist
Help Build the Data Behind What's Next
ArtiFlex is building a proprietary data environment that brings together information from Salesforce, ERP systems, and other internal databases. At the center of this effort is an AI-powered platform designed to make that information more accessible and useful across the business.
We're looking for a Data Scientist to help build and support this evolving data environment. You'll work with complex data, develop analytical and predictive solutions, and partner with business and technical teams to turn data into useful information and insights.
What You'll Do
Model Development
  • Design, build, and deploy machine learning algorithms, statistical models, and predictive workflows.
  • Support the development of forecasting and other data models as the organization's data foundation develops.

Data Observation & Management
  • Clean, preprocess, and integrate large structured and unstructured datasets from multiple sources.
  • Help ensure data is accurate, current, and usable across the organization's systems.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with product, production, services, engineering, and other business teams to understand data needs, challenges, and how data is used.
  • Work with business and technical teams to support the development and integration of data science solutions, while building relationships with business leaders and data owners to identify improvement opportunities.

Business Insights
  • Translate complex analytical results into clear, actionable recommendations for business and executive stakeholders.
  • Help make organizational data more accessible and useful through ArtiFlex's proprietary Data Link and AI-enabled tools.

Performance Monitoring
  • Track, maintain, and optimize live models to support ongoing accuracy and business value.
  • Monitor data quality and identify opportunities for improvement.
This Role May Be for You If...
  • You have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
  • You have 3+ years of experience in Data Science, Business Analytics, or a related field.
  • You have strong database management skills using SQL for querying, aggregating, and analyzing data.
  • You have experience with Python and a solid foundation in supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques.
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • You communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • You are proactive and interested in understanding both the data and the business needs behind it.
Technology & Tools
Our environment includes technologies such as Python, Databricks, Delta Lake, AWS (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft Azure, Azure ML/AI, Azure Cognitive Services, SAS, R, SQL, DB2, GitHub, and Power BI.
You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed. We're looking for strong data science fundamentals and the ability to learn and work across a modern data and AI environment.
What Success Looks Like
In your first 6-12 months, success will mean making measurable progress in cleaning and improving our data, developing proactive processes with data owners, and building relationships with business leaders to understand their data needs and challenges.
As the data foundation develops, you'll have the opportunity to expand into data modeling, forecasting, predictive analytics, and AI-driven solutions.
A Few More Details
  • Reports to: IT Director
  • Typical Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
