What Does a Python Data Analyst Do?

As a Python data analyst, you use the Python programming language to develop tools for data mining, analysis, and data visualization. You typically develop a script to meet the specific data needs of your client or employer. Then, you test your code and perform debugging duties before deploying it in a live environment. Some data analysts also have algorithm creation responsibilities. In this case, after creating and testing an algorithm, you use Python with your algorithm to interpret data. You also develop reports to show to your clients or employers, and you may code a web app or interface that clients can use to visualize data sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid grasp of statistics, and proficiency in Python programming, often supported by a degree in data science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis libraries like pandas and NumPy, visualization tools such as Matplotlib or Seaborn, and experience with data querying languages like SQL are typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication help you derive insights and present findings clearly to stakeholders. These skills and qualities are vital for transforming raw data into actionable business intelligence and supporting data-driven decision-making.

How do Python Data Analysts typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Python Data Analysts often work closely with teams such as marketing, finance, and product development to provide data-driven insights that inform business decisions. They regularly participate in cross-functional meetings to understand departmental objectives, gather requirements for data analysis, and present their findings in an accessible manner. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical results into actionable recommendations are essential, as analysts often act as a bridge between technical data and non-technical stakeholders.

Castle & Key Distillery

Job description

The Opportunity

Castle & Key is at a pivotal moment — reshaping our business to operate with discipline, clarity, and a focus on cash and margin. We are building a more data-driven organization and are looking for a Strategic Finance & Analytics Analyst to help lead that evolution.

This role sits at the intersection of Finance, Operations, and Data — with a strong emphasis on improving data structure, building scalable analytics, and enabling better decision-making across the business.

You will help move the company from manual, fragmented reporting toward a more automated, integrated data environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Support forecasting, budgeting, and long-range planning

  • Analyze variances and connect financial results to operational drivers

  • Build and maintain financial models tied to volume, pricing, and margin

Data Architecture & Analytics

  • Help design and improve data structures across systems (ERP, production, sales, inventory)

  • Write and optimize queries using SQL to extract, transform, and analyze data

  • Build and maintain dashboards in Tableau to support real-time decision-making

  • Support development of a scalable data environment (e.g., Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouse)

  • Integrate and standardize data sources to create a consistent “single source of truth”

  • Improve data quality, governance, and accessibility across the organization

Operational Partnership

  • Partner with distilling, bottling, hospitality, and sales teams to understand performance drivers

  • Translate operational data into financial insights (cost, margin, cash flow)

  • Support initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize working capital

Process & Systems Development

  • Identify opportunities to automate reporting and eliminate manual processes

  • Support implementation of analytics and reporting tools

  • Help define and standardize KPIs across the business

What We’re Looking For

Experience

  • 3+ years in FP&A, consulting, business analytics, or similar role

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or related field

  • Strong foundation in finance, accounting, or economics

  • Advanced Excel / Google Sheets skills

  • Working knowledge of SQL (required)

  • Experience with Tableau or similar BI tools

  • Understanding of data structures and relational databases

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to Python (pandas, data manipulation)

  • Experience working with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake)

  • Experience with ERP or operational data systems

Mindset

  • Curious and analytical — enjoys working with complex, imperfect data

  • Builder mentality — interested in creating systems, not just maintaining reports

  • Strong communicator — able to translate data into business decisions

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment
