What is a Python Data Analysis Internship?

A Python Data Analysis Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in analyzing data using the Python programming language. Interns typically assist with collecting, cleaning, and interpreting large datasets, using Python libraries such as pandas, NumPy, and matplotlib. The internship is designed to help participants develop practical skills in data manipulation, statistical analysis, and data visualization. It is a great way to gain real-world experience in data science and analytics while building a professional network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Data Analysis Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Data Analysis Intern, you need a solid understanding of statistics, data manipulation, and Python programming, often supported by relevant coursework or projects. Familiarity with tools such as pandas, NumPy, Jupyter Notebook, and data visualization libraries like matplotlib or seaborn is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns interpret data and share insights clearly with team members. These skills enable interns to extract actionable insights from complex datasets and effectively contribute to data-driven decision making.

What is the difference between Python Data Analysis Internship vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Responsibilities
**This position is for upcoming work and is contingent upon task award/funding.
** This will be an onsite position in Albuquerque, NM.
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Operations Research Analyst (Data Engineer) to support a dynamic government contracting program in Albuquerque, NM. In this role, you will serve as a core contributor within a testing and data review environment, supporting the acquisition, curation, validation, and management of complex datasets tied to weapons effects and test programs. You will work alongside multidisciplinary engineering and analysis teams to develop and maintain robust data models, apply uncertainty analysis methodologies, and contribute to the development and refinement of analysis tools and software. This is an excellent opportunity for a mid-career professional to make meaningful contributions to national defense programs in a technically challenging and collaborative setting.
Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, execute, and oversee data acquisition and curation workflows for testing programs, ensuring data integrity, traceability, and completeness from collection through archival.
  • Perform data validation and analytics on test-derived datasets, identifying anomalies, inconsistencies, and quality issues while applying corrective actions and documentation protocols.
  • Manage and maintain weapons effects and tests databases, including schema design, data population, version control, and access management in support of program testing objectives.
  • Develop and implement data models for functional characterization of weapons systems and effects, enabling quantitative analysis and decision support for test evaluation teams.
  • Apply uncertainty analysis techniques to assess measurement error, data variability, and confidence levels within test datasets and analytical outputs.
  • Support the development, integration, and validation of analysis tools and software used for processing, visualizing, and interpreting test and evaluation data.
  • Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and program managers to translate complex data requirements into structured analytical products and actionable technical findings.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Operations Research, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 8 years of experience in data engineering, operations research, or a related analytical role, preferably within a DoW or government contracting environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with database design, management, and querying (e.g., SQL, relational and/or NoSQL platforms).
  • Proficiency in data analytics and scripting tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, or equivalent languages used for data processing and validation.
  • Familiarity with uncertainty analysis methodologies, including error propagation, statistical confidence analysis, and sensitivity analysis techniques.
  • Experience with data validation processes and quality assurance practices applied to large or complex technical datasets.
  • US Citizen with an Active Top Secret / SCI security clearance (required at time of application)

Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting weapons effects testing, range testing, or T&E (Test and Evaluation) programs within a DoW or national laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with weapons systems data or energetics/effects characterization datasets and associated terminology.
  • Experience developing or maintaining data pipelines and ETL processes in support of scientific or engineering workflows.
  • Knowledge of data visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, or custom Python/MATLAB-based tools) for communicating analytical results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Graduate degree (M.S.) in a relevant technical discipline or equivalent advanced professional experience.
