THIS IS A 3-YEAR FIXED-TERM POSITION LOCATED IN DURHAM, NC
At Syngenta, our goal is to build the most collaborative and trustworthy team in agriculture, providing top-quality seeds and innovative crop protection solutions that improve farmers' success. To support this mission, Syngenta's Seeds Research Traits Team is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Durham, NC. This role will lead innovative research initiatives in hemipteran insect control by designing and implementing bioassay platforms and investigating insect-trait interactions.
The Postdoctoral Researcher drives the discovery of novel crop protection solutions through high-level experimental design, mechanistic studies, and the translation of complex data into actionable research directions. The role will serve as a subject matter expert in hemipteran biology and will design experiments and optimize rearing practices.
Accountabilities:
  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of complex in vitro and in planta bioassays to evaluate novel insecticidal traits.
  • Identify and implement cutting-edge technologies (e.g., digital imaging or automated phenotyping) to improve assay sensitivity and throughput.
  • Perform statistical analysis to identify trends and insights.
  • Author high-quality technical reports and present findings to internal stakeholders.
  • Establish and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for novel methodologies, ensuring scientific rigor and reproducibility.
  • Provide scientific guidance and technical training to junior staff involved in colony maintenance and assay execution.
  • Manage project timelines and resources effectively to meet Trait Discovery milestones.

Qualifications
Required:
  • Ph.D. in Entomology, Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field (completed by start date).
  • Applicant should be 3 years or less from PhD granting date
  • Specialized knowledge of hemipteran physiology, feeding behavior, or toxicology.
  • Research Track Record: Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, evidenced by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Advanced Analytics: Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, Python, JMP, or SAS) for biological data analysis.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert-level experience in designing insect bioassays and handling delicate hemipteran species.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for presenting complex scientific concepts to varied audiences.
  • Problem-Solving: Proven ability to troubleshoot complex biological systems and experimental hurdles.

Desired:
  • Experience with molecular techniques in an insect research context.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and automated liquid handling/robotics.
  • Knowledge of plant-insect interactions and trait delivery mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with various microscopy techniques (confocal, SEM, or digital imaging analysis).
