What is the difference between Python Automation Testing vs Manual Software Testing?

AspectPython Automation TestingManual Software Testing
Required SkillsPython programming, automation tools, scriptingTest case execution, attention to detail, communication
Work EnvironmentAutomated testing frameworks, scripting environmentsTest labs, user environments, manual execution
Industry UsageSoftware development, QA teams, continuous integrationInitial testing phases, exploratory testing, user acceptance

Python Automation Testing involves writing scripts to automate test cases, increasing efficiency and repeatability. Manual Software Testing requires testers to execute test cases manually, focusing on exploratory and usability aspects. Both roles are essential in software quality assurance, but Python Automation Testing emphasizes automation skills, while manual testing emphasizes detailed test execution and observation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Python Automation Testing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python Automation Testing professional, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, knowledge of software testing methodologies, and experience with test automation frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, PyTest, Jenkins, and version control systems like Git is typically required, along with certifications like ISTQB being advantageous. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help testers identify issues, collaborate with teams, and document findings clearly. These competencies ensure the creation of reliable, maintainable automated tests that improve software quality and streamline development cycles.

What are some common challenges faced in a Python Automation Testing role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Python Automation Testing is maintaining test scripts as applications evolve, which can lead to flaky tests or outdated scripts. To address this, it's important to implement modular and reusable code, and regularly review and refactor test cases. Collaborating closely with developers and participating in code reviews can also help testers anticipate changes and adapt their tests proactively. Additionally, integrating robust reporting and logging mechanisms helps quickly identify and resolve issues, ensuring the reliability of the automated test suite.

What is Python Automation Testing?

Python Automation Testing refers to the process of using Python programming language to write scripts that automatically test software applications. These scripts can validate functionality, performance, and reliability of software, reducing the need for manual testing and speeding up the development cycle. Python is popular for automation testing because of its readability, extensive libraries like Selenium and PyTest, and strong community support. Automation tests can be integrated into continuous integration pipelines to ensure consistent quality across software releases.

Teledyne Technologies Incorporated provides enabling technologies for industrial growth markets that require advanced technology and high reliability. These markets include aerospace and defense, factory automation, air and water quality environmental monitoring, electronics design and development, oceanographic research, deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, medical imaging and pharmaceutical research.

We are looking for individuals who thrive on making an impact and want the excitement of being on a team that wins.

Job Description

** US Citizenship or Green Card Holder is required for this position. We are unable to hire individuals who need a work visa, are currently on a work visa, or individuals who will require work visa sponsorship in the future. **

At Teledyne FLIR in Orem, we design and develop unmanned aircraft systems and missioncritical payloads that operate in demanding environments. Our teams work closely with defense and security partners to deliver reliable, fielded systems where robustness, performance, and maintainability matter. We are a small, collaborative engineering team focused on solving real problems with disciplined engineering and clear ownership.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Sr. Embedded Software Developer to develop and integrate software for small unmanned aircraft systems and associated subsystems. This is a handson, productfocused role spanning microcontrollers, RTOSbased systems, and embedded Linux. The ideal candidate is a strong individual contributor who can work independently, contribute effectively from day one, and reason about software behavior across hardware and software boundaries. This role values systemlevel awareness and the ability to participate meaningfully in architectural decisions while continuing to produce highquality embedded code.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop embedded software in C and C++ for microcontrollers, RTOSbased systems (e.g., Zephyr or similar), and embedded Linux platforms

  • Design and implement core embedded constructs such as state machines, timingsensitive logic, and basic algorithms

  • Integrate software across multiple interconnected processors and subsystems, including sensors, cameras, and payload devices

  • Develop and maintain lowlevel drivers and hardware interfaces

  • Work with common embedded communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and Ethernet

  • Perform systemlevel debugging using tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and incircuit debuggers

  • Own features from initial design through implementation, integration, testing, and field support

  • Contribute to system architecture and interface design in collaboration with other engineers

  • Build and maintain internal tools, test utilities, and automation, often using Python

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • 5+ years of professional experience developing embedded software for production systems

  • Strong proficiency in C and C++ for embedded targets

  • Experience working across multiple layers of an embedded system, including MCU firmware, RTOSbased software, and embedded Linux

  • Solid understanding of microcontroller peripherals and interdevice communication protocols

  • Demonstrated ability to debug complex hardware/software interactions and resolve systemlevel issues

  • Experience delivering reliable embedded software in a collaborative engineering environment

Helpful Experience (Nice to Have):

  • Experience with UAS software stacks or autopilot systems, particularly PX4, including integration with sensors, payloads, or higherlevel system components

  • Experience developing firmware for microcontrollers, including peripheral configuration and lowlevel driver development

  • Experience with realtime operating systems such as Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or similar

  • Board bringup and lowlevel hardware/software debugging experience

  • Familiarity with STM32, NVIDIA Jetson, or similar embedded platforms

  • Exposure to UAS, robotics, or other complex embedded systems

Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee or must be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate export control license from the U.S. Departments of State or Commerce.
