What is Python automation testing?

Python Automation Testing refers to the process of using Python programming language to write scripts that automatically test software applications. These scripts can validate functionality, performance, and reliability of software, reducing the need for manual testing and speeding up the development cycle. Python is popular for automation testing because of its readability, extensive libraries like Selenium and PyTest, and strong community support. Automation tests can be integrated into continuous integration pipelines to ensure consistent quality across software releases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for Python automation testing?

To thrive as a Python Automation Testing professional, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, knowledge of software testing methodologies, and experience with test automation frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, PyTest, Jenkins, and version control systems like Git is typically required, along with certifications like ISTQB being advantageous. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help testers identify issues, collaborate with teams, and document findings clearly. These competencies ensure the creation of reliable, maintainable automated tests that improve software quality and streamline development cycles.

What are common challenges in Python automation testing, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Python Automation Testing is maintaining test scripts as applications evolve, which can lead to flaky tests or outdated scripts. To address this, it's important to implement modular and reusable code, and regularly review and refactor test cases. Collaborating closely with developers and participating in code reviews can also help testers anticipate changes and adapt their tests proactively. Additionally, integrating robust reporting and logging mechanisms helps quickly identify and resolve issues, ensuring the reliability of the automated test suite.

What is the difference between Python Automation Testing vs Manual Software Testing?

AspectPython Automation TestingManual Software Testing
Required SkillsPython programming, automation tools, scriptingTest case execution, attention to detail, communication
Work EnvironmentAutomated testing frameworks, scripting environmentsTest labs, user environments, manual execution
Industry UsageSoftware development, QA teams, continuous integrationInitial testing phases, exploratory testing, user acceptance

Python Automation Testing involves writing scripts to automate test cases, increasing efficiency and repeatability. Manual Software Testing requires testers to execute test cases manually, focusing on exploratory and usability aspects. Both roles are essential in software quality assurance, but Python Automation Testing emphasizes automation skills, while manual testing emphasizes detailed test execution and observation.

Job description

About the Team

Anduril Electrical Test Engineering deploys test equipment and testing capabilities that support the next generation of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) designed within Anduril. The Electrical Test Team is embedded within Anduril' s Electrical Engineering team to ensure rapid testing and validation response in design and production while supporting Cognizant Design Engineers taking their products from conception, validation, manufacturing to end of life. We are looking for a candidate to lead testing for our new radio products.

About the Role

The Senior Test Firmware Engineer sits at the intersection of hardware and software validation within Anduril's Electrical Test team. You'll own the test firmware layer - writing C on microcontrollers that exposes internal hardware for automated testing, and building the Python/LabView frameworks on the host side that drive those tests. Your work directly enables the team to validate Anduril's next-generation radio products from prototype through production. You'll partner closely with Cognizant Design Engineers and the manufacturing team to ensure test coverage keeps pace with rapid hardware iteration. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on lab environment, is equally comfortable writing bare-metal C and Python automation scripts, and wants to build test infrastructure that scales across multiple product lines.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and build a unified test environment consisting of target-side test firmware and host-side Python/LabView execution frameworks.
  • Develop C-based MCU test firmware that exposes internal hardware peripherals, drivers, and system functions via serial/bus APIs (UART, CAN, SPI, etc.) for external host control.
  • Create reusable abstraction layers and drivers for both on-board microcontroller peripherals and benchtop lab equipment (using PyVISA, SCPI, or vendor APIs).
  • Quickly debug and troubleshoot issues that span the electrical, firmware, and software boundaries.
  • Engage with the manufacturing and electrical engineering test teams on test coverage and features.
  • Participate in schematic and test plan reviews and provide expertise on test firmware capability.
  • Maintain automated test suites, analyze results, and work with developers to resolve issues.
  • Develop test HITL stations for regression testing.
  • Support board bring-up and bench validation as needed.
  • Support Design Engineer with DFT, provide feedback from test results to improve quality and test coverage.
  • Support manufacture test bring-up and yield.
  • Provide technical mentorship to engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ Years of Experience with architecture, design and development in Python.
  • Experience writing embedded C for microcontrollers specifically for test instrumentation, register-level access, and exposing test hooks/APIs to a host PC.
  • Experience developing or working with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) test systems.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies.
  • Experience with test management software (e.g., JIRA) and automated testing tools (e.g., Jenkins, CircleCI).
  • Strong understanding of software QA methodologies.
  • Experience with Linux operating systems and commands.
  • Experience with peripherals and developing test and validation strategies.
  • Advanced experience with computer hardware communication bus protocols: USB, I2C, I2S, CSI, Ethernet, SPI, PCIe, HDMI, CAN, serial comms, etc
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to support product development from prototype to production
  • Understanding of lab safety protocols when working in all types of lab environment.
  • Familiarity with measurement analysis techniques such as Gage RR and Process Capability Analysis.
  • Deep understanding of hardware-software integration and system-level testing methodologies.
  • Experience with source code revision and control. Experience with GitHub is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export controlled information or facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience RF test equipment such as Vector Network Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzers, Signal Generators, and Power Meters
  • Experience with testing RF components like power amplifiers, transmitters, receivers, and filters
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and VISIO.
  • Hands-on experience with firmware development, test execution, and bring-up on STM32-class microcontrollers, NXP S32K automotive MCUs, and NVIDIA Jetson Orin edge platforms.
  • A detail-oriented individual who strives in an environment that values effective team collaboration
  • Experience in Product Release Cycle from prototype to production and key deliverables of each phase
  • Experience with wired networking technologies (Gigabit, 10Gigabit)
  • Hands-on experience with complex networking equipment, a deep understanding of networking protocols, test design and implementation chops and a background in IP network design
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines
  • Experience with other scripting languages (e.g. Bash)
  • Experience with embedded C development on microcontroller cores (ARM, AVR, MSP430, PIC, etc.)
  • Familiarity with automation of test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supply and JTAG
