The Purchasing Agent is responsible for procuring construction materials, equipment, and subcontracted services at the best possible value while ensuring quality, timely delivery, and compliance with company standards. This position works closely with project managers, estimators, vendors, and field personnel to support successful project execution through effective purchasing and supplier management.
Responsibilities
Solicit and evaluate bids from vendors and suppliers.
Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules to achieve cost savings.
Issue purchase orders and maintain accurate purchasing records.
Coordinate material deliveries to align with project schedules.
Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and subcontractors.
Monitor inventory levels and recommend replenishment as needed.
Review construction plans, specifications, and material takeoffs to determine purchasing requirements.
Verify invoices and resolve discrepancies with vendors and accounting.
Track material costs and identify opportunities for value engineering and cost reduction.
Ensure purchased materials comply with project specifications and quality standards.
Assist project managers with procurement planning and budget management.
Monitor market trends and material availability to anticipate supply chain challenges.
Maintain compliance with company purchasing policies and applicable regulations.
Requirements
Valid driver's license.
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field preferred.
Minimum of 3-5 years of purchasing experience in commercial or residential construction.
Strong knowledge of construction materials, equipment, and procurement processes.
Experience negotiating contracts and vendor agreements.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
Experience with construction management or ERP software is preferred.
Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Analytical mindset with strong attention to detail.
Knowledge of construction terminology, drawings, and specifications.
Ability to establish and maintain positive vendor relationships.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Primarily office-based with occasional visits to construction sites and supplier locations.
Ability to sit for extended periods while using a computer.
Occasionally lift and carry materials or samples weighing up to 25 pounds.
Ability to travel locally as needed.
