The punk movement is characterized by its distinctive music style (punk rock), rebellious fashion, and anti-establishment attitudes. Over time, punk has influenced art, literature, and broader popular culture.

While both Punk and DJ roles are rooted in music, Punk is a genre and cultural movement emphasizing raw, rebellious music often performed live, whereas a DJ focuses on mixing and playing recorded music for audiences. Punk involves band performances and a DIY ethos, while DJs operate in nightlife settings, curating music for events. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and industry expectations for each role.

Job description

Long Beach Coast Baseball
Job Description: Mascot Performer, Derrick the Parrot
Position: Mascot Performer, Derrick the Parrot
Department: Community Engagement
Reports To: Manager, Community Engagement
Compensation: $21-25 per hour
Schedule: Part-time, seasonal. Shifts range from 2-7 hours and include home games, promotional appearances, and community events. Nights, weekends, and holidays required based on the game schedule.
Who is Derrick?
Derrick the Parrot is the official mascot of Long Beach Coast Baseball and the living spirit of the 562. He's the biggest, brightest bird to ever fly out of the Long Beach flocks, a green-and-red blur against the grey concrete who traded the easy life in the parks for the pulse of the city. He's flown the Eastside to North LB, Cambodia Town to the Pike, and he knows Long Beach isn't a place you just survive, it's a place you make colorful.
He claimed his perch atop the Oil Islands, watching the city lights, the lowriders on the boulevard, and the kids playing stickball in the alleys, standing unshakeable like the steel towers beneath him. That's how he earned his name: Derrick, the iron bird that never sleeps.
He didn't wait for an invitation to join the team. He crashed batting practice, landed on the home run fence, and squawked louder than the PA system, demanding the team play as hard as the city lives. Long Beach gets overlooked by the glitz of LA and the polish of the OC, and that's put a permanent chip on Derrick's shoulder. He's out to prove Strong Beach is pound-for-pound the best.
The Character
  • Confident, street-smart, and unmistakably "Strong Beach." Derrick walks with a swagger that says we're different here, and we like it that way.
  • A chameleon of culture who moves between hip-hop, banda, and ska-punk, connecting every corner of the city because he belongs to all of them.
  • The guardian of the city's pride, reminding fans that it doesn't matter where you're from, once you're in the stadium, you're part of the same flock.

What You'll Do
  • Perform as Derrick the Parrot during home games, bringing the character's energy, swagger, and humor to fans of all ages.
  • Lead and energize crowds through in-game entertainment, dugout visits, dance-offs, and between-inning bits.
  • Represent Derrick at community events, promotional appearances, school visits, and sponsor activations across Long Beach.
  • Interact safely and appropriately with fans, especially children, while staying in character.
  • Work closely with the game entertainment and stadium operations team to execute the game-day script and promotional schedule.
  • Properly maintain the mascot suit and related equipment, including regular cleaning, sanitizing, and storage, and promptly reporting any damage or needed repairs.
  • Uphold the character consistently, never breaking character in public and never revealing the mascot's identity.

What We're Looking For
  • High energy, comfort performing in front of large crowds, and strong improvisational skills.
  • Physical stamina to perform in a full costume for extended periods, including in heat, and to move, dance, and engage actively throughout a shift.
  • Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to arrive well before gates open and stay through the full event.
  • A genuine connection to or appreciation for Long Beach and its neighborhoods and culture.
  • Prior mascot, theater, dance, or performance experience is a plus but not required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to wear a full-body costume, including a large head piece, for extended periods.
  • Ability to stand, walk, dance, and perform physical bits for the duration of a shift (2-7 hours).
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat and bright stadium lighting.
  • Ability to lift and carry promotional items (t-shirts, prizes) up to 25 lbs.

How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit an application through messaging. Please text your audition video to (502) 889-9898 as well as apply online via this job description.
We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, gender identity, marital or veteran status, or any other protected class.
