Pump Applications Engineer information

What is a pump applications engineer?

Pump Applications Engineers are specialized professionals who design, select, and recommend pumps and pumping systems for various industrial and commercial applications. They work with clients to determine their specific fluid movement requirements, analyze system needs, and provide technical support throughout the sales and installation process. These engineers often collaborate with sales teams, project managers, and manufacturers to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective pumping solutions are implemented. Their expertise ensures that pumps are properly sized, installed, and maintained for optimal performance and longevity.

What are some typical challenges a pump applications engineer faces when supporting sales teams and clients?

Pump Applications Engineers often encounter challenges such as accurately analyzing complex system requirements, selecting the right pump configurations, and addressing unique customer needs within tight deadlines. They must balance technical feasibility with cost-effectiveness, all while ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Additionally, effective communication with sales teams and clients is crucial to translate technical details into clear, actionable solutions that meet both performance and budget expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pump applications engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pump Applications Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, and experience with pump selection and system design, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, pump sizing tools, and industry standards such as API and ANSI is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and attention to detail help engineers effectively collaborate with clients and internal teams. These skills ensure accurate system design, customer satisfaction, and reliable performance in complex industrial applications.

Job description

About Pump.co

Cloud spend is a whopping $500 billion/yr, the biggest growing expense category for any tech company. Tackling these costs requires continuous effort and time from DevOps teams.

Pump is building the fastest way to save ~60% on cloud spend. Our AI-powered platform not only fully automates savings, but we also leverage the power of group buying for even greater discounts. Our mission is to use AI to transform the status quo of cloud cost optimization.

We are backed by Y Combinator, and our founding team consists of seasoned entrepreneurs with prior exits. We have a transparent, collaborative, and fast-paced culture that prioritizes winning with a flat organizational structure.

About the role

Skills: AWS, Postgres, Kubernetes, Python, Terraform

You will play a critical role in building our platform, driving the technical direction of our company. This is a hands-on position that will involve working on all parts of our infra, from our environments to the services that run on them, and collaborating with other engineers, designers, and founders. A great opportunity for someone to create a lasting impact not only on the primary product but also on the company's values and vision, given our early stage. We hope Pump will be that career-defining opportunity for all of us!

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of our AWS infrastructure. Ensure our environments are usable and stable.
  • Create tooling to allow our developers to safely and efficiently use our AWS environment to develop applications.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and designers to build a user-friendly and intuitive platform that meets our customers' needs.
  • Help define and execute the technical roadmap for our platform, balancing technical debt and innovation to ensure we can deliver on our business goals.
  • Inventing, extending, and maintaining development processes, tools, and workflows.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience as an infra or devops engineer, with a focus on building scalable and reliable web applications, preferably at a pre-Series B startup. Tech Lead experience is a plus.
  • Ability to decompose large problems into concrete deliverables and milestones and then deliver against the committed plan.
  • Strong proficiency AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
  • Expertise with SQL and NoSQL databases. We use Postgres and Dynamo!
  • Expertise with Docker and container orchestration systems (e.g. Kubernetes).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with and enjoys creating prototypes and experimenting quickly.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive healthcare and dental coverage for you
  • 401(k) plan
  • Generous PTO: 13 accrued days, plus company shutdown December 24-January 1st
  • Free lunch & dinner at the office
  • Annual company-paid retreats
  • Developmental bonuses: support for professional development opportunities tied to cloud and related fields
