Job description

UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO, MEDICAL SCIENCES CAMPUS DEANSHIP OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS FACULTY APPOINTMENT TITLE: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: PROBATIONARY WITH OPTION FOR TENURE WORK LOCATION: MEDICAL SCIENCES CAMPUS, UNIVERSITY OF PUERTO RICO DATE OF ISSUANCE: APRIL 13, 2026 LAST DAY TO APPLY: APRIL 30, 2026 (REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS WILL BEGIN ON APRIL 30, 2026 AND WILL CONTINUE UNTIL RECRUITMENT FOR THIS FACULTY POSITION IS COMPLETED) WHO QUALIFIES: All candidates who meet the position requirements Neuroscience / Computational Neuroscience โ€“ Institute of Neurobiology

The Institute of Neurobiology of the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus invites applications for one tenureโ€‘track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. We seek a creative, collaborative investigator with research interests in neuroscience, neurophysiology, or computational neuroscience, preferably using invertebrate models or nonโ€‘model systems.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree from an accredited institution, have completed at least two years of postdoctoral training, and demonstrate research productivity appropriate to their career stage. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and sustain an active, externally fundable research program, participate in the training of graduate students and postdoctoral associates, and contribute to the academic mission of the Institute. Opportunities for joint appointment in an appropriate department of the School of Medicine are available and eligibility for them will be expected.

Applicants should be aware that the Institute of Neurobiology is currently operating under transitional conditions. The Institute building is closed while major repairs are undertaken, and a reopening date has not yet been determined. During this period, Institute investigators have been relocated to the main campus, where research activities continue. The selected candidate will therefore begin the appointment in shared laboratory space hosted by an existing investigator, within a collaborative research environment.

The institution will provide full salary support for this position. At present, a taxโ€‘free program enables researchers to receive institutional incentives of up to 100% of their salary, based upon successful competitive funding. However, dedicated independent laboratory space and startโ€‘up funds are not currently available. Accordingly, this opportunity may be especially well suited for candidates with a strong collaborative orientation, an adaptable research program, and/or access to existing collaborations or nonโ€‘recurrent sources of support that would facilitate the continuation or expansion of their work in this setting. Candidates with collaborative contacts in the continental United States and/or abroad are particularly encouraged to apply.

In addition to research excellence, we are especially interested in applicants that can complement existing strengths in behavior, connectomics, physiology, molecular genetics, and imaging, and who have experience or are willing to receive training in AI and machine learning, and are suited and willing to contribute to the development of an academic and/or training program in computational neuroscience at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus.

Because of institutional timelines, the position must be filled before June 30, 2026. For full consideration, applications should be received by April 30, 2026.

Applicants should submit a single PDF containing the following: curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, brief plan for obtaining extramural funding, names and contact information of three referees, and reprints of two significant publications.
