They manage the editorial process, coordinate with authors and editors, handle marketing and sales strategies, and ensure that content reaches the intended audience. Publishers also assess market trends, acquire new titles or content, and often supervise budget and legal matters related to publishing. Their goal is to make sure the content is high quality, profitable, and aligns with the company's vision.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a publisher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Publisher, you need a solid background in editorial processes, content management, and business development, often supported by a degree in communications, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with publishing software (like Adobe InDesign), content management systems (CMS), and digital marketing tools is crucial. This involves coordinating with editorial, design, marketing, and sales teams to ensure the book’s vision is realized and reaches its target audience. Publishers often mediate between creative and commercial goals, balancing author input with market trends and company strategy. Effective communication and project management skills are essential, as you’ll oversee timelines and resolve issues that arise across departments.

Job description

Turn your love of community into a career.

Best Version Media is looking for a driven, community-minded sales professional to join us as a Media Sales Representative.

About Best Version Media

Founded in 2007, Best Version Media (BVM) has spent nearly two decades bringing North American communities together one person, one home, one business at a time. Today, BVM publishes over 1,300 local magazines and reaches billions of digital impressions across North America, helping thousands of local business owners grow.

What You’ll Do

This is a field-based, in-person sales role. You’ll build your own book of business in your local territory, on a schedule you control, selling advertising placements across BVM’s local print magazine and companion digital, social, and website products.

  • Consult: Meet face-to-face with standout local business owners to showcase what makes their community great.
  • Strategize: Build powerful, multi-channel branding programs using our media suite, print, digital, social, websites, and reputation management.
  • Scale: Leverage our proven training and time-tested sales system to grow your own book of business, building community engagement that pays you and your community for years to come.
What You’ll Earn

This is a 1099 independent contractor role with no base salary or draw (full commission). Representatives earn a recurring commission on sales, with commission rates generally ranging from 70-80% based on monthly sales volume and performance relative to the baseline* cost structure. Bonuses are available during start-up and on an ongoing basis.

*Baseline is the back-end cost associated with the magazine & digital product’s cost to produce, distribute, bill clients, etc, and does not come out of the representative’s pocket.

What You Bring
  • Sales Acumen: A drive to help local businesses grow through the art of advertising sales, strong communication, negotiation, and closing skills. Experience with digital or print advertising is a plus, but the right attitude matters most; we provide the training.
  • Growth Mindset: A resilient, never-give-up attitude paired with a proactive approach to learning and continuous self-improvement.
  • Community Focus: A genuine interest in building and nurturing relationships with local business owners, putting their success first.
Why Best Version Media?
  • Support: Comprehensive training and ongoing professional support, we’re a community in ourselves.
  • Proven Success: Nearly 20 years serving local communities, with over 1,300 publications and a reach of billions of digital impressions across North America.
  • Culture & Rewards: Our why is simple: bring communities closer, one relationship at a time, and we celebrate the people who make that happen.
  • Earn incentive trips, awards, and friendly contests along the way, all within a flexible schedule built to keep you present for what matters most: friends and family.
Ready to make an impact in your local community?
