About the Position
Are you looking to start a career with the City of St. Paul? Our Public Works Sewer Utility Division is seeking Sewer Services Workers to join our team. As a Sewer Services Worker, you will have the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks to help maintain our city's sanitary and storm sewers. There are certified vacancies requiring a Class A CDL and temporary vacancies requiring a Class B CDL.
Saint Paul Public Works is a nationally accredited department responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the street, sewer, and drainage infrastructure systems in the city of Saint Paul. The city owns and maintains approximately 804 miles of sanitary sewer and 450 miles of storm sewer that are in public streets, alleys, or easements. Over 1,000 miles of 74,000 private sanitary sewer service pipes from residential and commercial properties are connected to the City's public sanitary sewer system.
**Please Note: The Sewer Utility Division will be holding interviews bi-weekly throughout the course of the posting to fill immediate vacancies.
Here's what you can expect to do:
  • Work in confined spaces to include sewer pipes, manholes, tunnels, and pumping stations, etc.
  • Work in and around sewage.
  • Perform manual labor in constructing, locating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and cleaning sewer infrastructure.
  • Drive vehicles, operate, and maintain general construction and specialized equipment.
  • Adhere to all safety rules, regulations, policies, protocols, procedures, and work rules while completing assigned tasks.
  • Exhibit a commitment to public service by responding to after-hours calls, overtime, and emergency work such as sewer backups, flooding, and snow emergencies.
  • Work in roadway under traffic conditions.
  • Work in all types of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Walk, lift, push, pull, stand, and stoop on uneven and slippery surfaces.
  • Bend, crawl, climb, lift, shovel, and stoop repeatedly and for long periods of time.
  • Lift and carry equipment, tools, supplies, and materials more than 100 pounds.

Please Note: Individuals must weigh less than 280-lbs. All individuals are required to use fall protection when entering sewers. Fall protection equipment has a weight limit of 310-lbs. Required sewer gear, clothing, and equipment has a combined weight of 30-lbs. Therefore, only individuals weighing 280-lbs or less can use fall protection equipment when fully dressed and donning all necessary equipment.
Do you want to work as a temporary Sewer Services Worker, while obtaining a Class A CDL? Successful temporary sewer services worker candidates with a Class B CDL are eligible to participate in a free Class A CDL training program. Training will be held at the Sewers Utility using sewer related trucks and trailers. The CDL training program is a $5,500 value.
Typical Work Schedule
  • 10-hour days during the summer months: Monday - Thursday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • 8-hour days during the fall and winter months: Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Overtime Expectation: Overtime work is an expectation of Sewer Services Workers. You will be expected to show a commitment to public service by responding to afterhours calls, overtime, and emergency work such as sewer backups, flooding, and snow emergencies.

Position Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no restrictions for airbrakes. The CDL must have no suspensions or revocations for driving-related offenses during the two-year period prior to the date of appointment. Suspensions for parking-related offenses are excluded.
***Candidates with a Class B CDL may be hired on a temporary assignment, however, will not be eligible to obtain certified employment status until Human Resources receives confirmation of a valid Class A CDL as described above.
