This entry-level position offers hands-on training in answering 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching the appropriate emergency responders, and learning the vital skills needed to protect and serve. Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a standard high school course of study or the GED.
  • Ability to pass a standard critical testing procedure; must successfully complete the City of Hampton Public Safety Telecommunications Trainee program to include Call Taker, Fire and Police Telecommunications.
  • Will be required to successfully complete a Police Department background investigation to include a polygraph examination and pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain an EMD/CPR certification within a specified length of time in accordance with internal guidelines and a VCIN certification within 6 months of employment.

Additional Requirements
  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Position may require working nights, weekends, holidays and extended shifts as required. Incumbents are required to work in situations of extreme stress and in emergency, life threatening situations.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
  • Extensive knowledge of and proficiency in the use of personal computers; thorough knowledge of the city's geography; ability to speak clearly and distinctively over the radio; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and ability to give clear, concise feedback; ability to develop and maintain harmonious working relationships and work effectively with diverse groups; ability to exercise sound judgment and make appropriate decisions.
  • Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance. A sustained finding of untruthfulness at the conclusion of an internal investigation may result in immediate termination.
